10 Beginner tips for Babylon’s Fall you need to know

Follow these tips in our guide to get the most out of Babylon’s Fall, an online action RPG from the creators of NieR: Automata and Bayonetta.

In Babylon’s Fall you will join up to three other players as you brave the Ziggurat, a towering labyrinth of gauntlets and dungeons overrun with enemies.

As a Sentinel, you’ll master an arsenal of weapons as you earn new gear and gradually define your own unique playstyle. To get you started on your journey, here are 10 beginner tips for Babylon’s Fall you need to know.

Check your rewards

As a live service game, Babylon’s Fall is pretty generous when it comes to chucking rewards at you, hoping this will keep you hooked. Items, gear, and currency can be collected by simply logging in, as well as completing daily, weekly, and season missions. These are similar to achievements, tasking you with feats such as completing a certain number of quests or killing enemies.

Parry and perfect dodge

Like most combat-heavy action games, Babylon’s Fall features a parry as well as a perfect dodge. Both require precise timing, though your Sentinel will need a shield equipped to perform a parry, hitting the action button just as your enemy’s attack is about to land. Using these defensive moves will help avoid damage while also allowing you to follow up with devastating attacks.

Enchantments

Deciding what gear to equip depends on a few factors. Raw attributes give you a quick overview of how weapons and armour can compliment your playstyle, whether you want increased damage, spirit recovery, or speed, for example. You should also be looking at any attached Enchantments. These are found on rare tier items (those that aren’t coloured grey) and can confer a list of gameplay bonuses.

Hidden Treasure

Babylon’s Fall loves to scatter loot throughout each of its gauntlet-like levels. You’ll often find treasure chests in plain sight, radiating with a golden glow. However, others aren’t so easy to find, being cleverly tucked behind ledges, or requiring some light platform puzzling. For example, you’ll need to throw slow grenades at bodies of water to create a temporary pathway.

Understanding Weapons

At launch, there are five different weapon types in Babylon’s Fall, including the Gladius, Hammer, Bow, Rod, and Shield. Your character has four available weapon slots: one for light attacks, one for heavy attacks, and two for Gideon Coffin abilities.

Aside from raw damage, keep an eye on other weapon stats such as crit chance, Impact (stun), Handling (attack speed), and Spirituality (MP earned per hit).

Understanding Armour

Your Sentinel has four armour slots and can also assign up to a max of three accessories. Armour pieces have a handful of attributes you should inspect carefully before equipping. Vitality will extend your overall health, while Sturdiness increases damage reduction. Meanwhile, Spirituality determines your max MP, Mobility affects the rate at which it recovers.

Fashion Kills

If we’re being brutally honest, Babylon’s Fall is a bad looking game. Although the action flows with that trademark PlatinumGames grace, you’d think it was more than a decade old. Characters are particularly ugly, emphasised by some of the garish armour combinations on offers. We’d recommend diving into the Vanity Attire equipment submenu – here you can equip cosmetic gear while also changing the colour of weapons and armour.

Combat Rating

To keep missions feeling immersive, Babylon’s Fall touts a score system. After each battle, you will receive a combat rating that can range from Stone to Pure Platinum. There are loads of gameplay factors that impact your end score, including clear time, critical attacks, combos, perfect dodges, parries, and backstabs to mention a handful. In our experience, clear time has the biggest impact on combat score.

Visit the Conch Shop

Conches are the base currency in Babylon’s Fall that can be earned through gameplay. Tucked away in Pygmalion’s shop is a menu where you can exchange Conches for a variety of items, as well as sell off any unwanted equipment and materials. The weapons and armour available aren’t so great, though there are some decent bundles for sale. The most useful things for sale here are the Item and EXP boosters. Pierced at 25K and 10K respectively, they can boost your in-game progress.

Make some easy progress

Initially, you should focus on rattling through those story missions as you ascend the Tower of Babylon. Doing so will progress the story, introducing new characters as well as new gameplay systems and activities. While it’s possible to play these missions solo, having a full squad will speed up clear times with less chance of falling in combat.

With these Babylon’s Fall tips, you’ll be well-equipped to brave the Ziggurat after creating your first Sentinel.

Want to know more about Babylon’s Fall? We’re currently busy working on our review, though first impressions are mixed. This is definitely a Platinum title through and through, but while co-op combat can be fun in small electrified doses, everything else is lacking. As a full priced game, the heavy presence of expensive microtransactions comes off as greedy and obstructive. We’ll see whether gamers agree when Babylon’s Fall officially launches on PS4, PS5, and PC today.
