2020 League of Legends Records, Highlights and Other Fun Facts

It was yet another strong year for competitive League of Legends. Despite facing numerous logistical issues due to the COVID epidemic, Riot Games was still able to secure an insane amount of viewers for their biggest event of the year. Hundreds of leagues across the world were still able to compete in a season fans will remember for years to come.

Here are some of our favorite moments from the 2020 LoL competitive season.

TSM Becomes Worst First Seed in Worlds History

This is a record that no team would want, LCS Summer Split Champions Team SoloMid became the first “first-seed” in Worlds history to go 0-6 in the 2020 League of Legends World Championship. While some could say this was unlucky based on their group, others would argue this was coming.

TSM was poor for the majority of the year and was only able to pull it around in the losers bracket of the 2020 LCS Summer Playoffs. TSM had opportunities to win at least one game but were not able to get any of them over the line.

This was the last ride for legends Bjergsen and Doublelift, both of whom retired at the end of the season.

Korea Reigns as LoL World Champions Once Again

Speaking on the LCK, the former kings of League of Legends regained their rightful crown as the best region in the world. Damwon Gaming was by far the best team in the world and most certainly were the best at this tournament.

This is the first time an LCK side has won the summoners cup since Samsung Galaxy back in 2017. Another fun fact is that this is the first time an LCK side has been in a world final since that Samsung victory.

2020 Sets Record for Most Unique LoL Champions Played

If fans thought 2019 was crazy for experimentation, they should have a look at 2020. This year brought the most champions ever used at the world championship at 133 unique champions played. Since the format change in 2017, this is the first time a tournament has reached triple digits for the number of unique champions. Syndra was the most used champion at the tournament with 323 games played out of the 472 total games played.

2020 Worlds Earns 139 Million Hours of Viewership

The 2020 League of Legends World Championship saw an increase in the total amount of viewing hours across the whole tournament. Esports biggest event of the year saw the figures rise from 137 million hours to 139 million hours. While it did not break the peak amount of viewers (3.9), the 2020 event saw a similar figure at 3.7 million. This figure came in the finals when Damwon Gaming took on Suning in an LCK vs LPL match up.

PerkZ Joins C9 in Biggest Player Transfer in Western LoL History

In a move that no one thought was possible, North American powerhouse Cloud9 acquired the services of arguably the greatest western player in League of Legends history, Perkz. This was a costly investment for C9, and while they may not get that back financially, they will more than get that back in success on the Rift. Overall, it is reported Cloud9 will be paying $11.75m for the superstar midlaner over the course of his contract.

Riot Games Pushes Forward During COVID Pandemic

The Coronavirus pandemic has been felt throughout the entire League of Legends scene, with most leagues being forced online for safety. While the East has started to return to some form of normality with players returning to arenas, the West is still finding ways to cope with the pandemic. The 2020 Mid-Season Invitational was cancelled and the chances of a world championship at the time looked very small.

As time went on Riot Games was able to ensure the safety of all its players, staff and crew members working on the tournament. A bubble was formed to ensure their safety and the World Championship officially took place. This was a monumental feat for Riot Games, the world championship provided a beacon of light for millions around the world in what was very dark times.

Cloud9 Fail to Make Worlds for First Time in Org’s History

C9 took the LCS further than it has ever gone before in 2018, reaching the semi-finals of that year’s World Championship. Cloud9 was a mainstay as a top North American team, and their presence at the World Championship seemed guaranteed at times. That’s why it was so shocking when Cloud9 failed to make worlds for the first time in the organization’s history.

Before the LCS Summer Playoffs, Cloud9 were on course to be one of the best rosters North America had ever produced. Cloud9 won Spring with a 23-2 record across regular season and playoffs. C9 continued that into the summer with a 9-0 start, this was until they collapsed and failed to make the top three in playoffs.

Jungler Takes Worlds Kill Record for First Time Since 2016

For the first time since the format of the new world championship, an ADC has not obtained the most kills at the world championship. Damwon Gaming’s Canyon earned the honour this time with 87 kills across 17 games. While his numbers are nowhere near the level of the previous winners, this is an incredible feat. Here is the list of the players who obtained the most kills at a single world championship since 2017:

• 2020: Canyon – 87 Kills in 17 games
• 2019: Lwx – 110 Kills in 18 games
• 2018: Jackeylove – 92 Kills in 18 games
• 2017: Uzi – 76 Kills in 15 games

Blow Your Horns: Ornn Dominates 2020 League of Legends Meta

Ornn is a very simple yet very powerful champion in both casual play and in the competitive scene. Ornn was the most picked top lane throughout the 2020 season and was a stable pick for the four major regions. Across the entire competitive scene, Ornn was played 1909 times with Korea having the most success with a 53% win-rate over the course of the year. Langx was a religious Ornn player over the course of the year with the LPL star having a 75% win-rate over 25 games.

KingGeorgie Ties Record for Most Deaths in a Single Game

The most deaths in a single game came in the scouting grounds circuit. A young North American player called KingGeorgie went an astounding 2/27/9 on Viegar ADC against Aphelios. This is certainly a feat that the young man will want to eradicate in 2021. Feeding is never a fun feeling in League of Legends and to have to endure these thoughts for 48 minutes is a game KingGeorgie will be quick to get out of his memory.
