2024 NFL Draft Prospect Watchlist: Tight Ends

The 2023 NFL Draft is over and teams are getting comfortable with their new draft picks. The next class of players is preparing for another year of college football. Each position will be analyzed in the coming days. Here is the 2024 NFL Draft prospect watchlist: Tight ends.

Jaheim Bell, Florida State Seminoles

Bell has been a productive player as both a pass catcher and rusher in his career. He didn’t do much in 2020, but in 2021 he had 497 receiving yards and five touchdowns. In more of a hybrid role in 2022, Bell had 261 rushing yards and 231 receiving yards. Following the season, Bell decided to transfer to Florida State.

In the NFL, Bell will be better suited in an H-Back role. He is just 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, which would make it hard for him to hold up as a blocker as an in-line tight end. Bell does offer good athleticism and solid route-running. He is good after the catch, which is also why South Carolina used him as a rusher in 2022. A good year at Florida State could see him be a day two pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Brock Bowers, Georgia Bulldogs

Bowers was one of the rare young tight ends to be productive right away. He had 56 receptions for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns as a freshman and helped the team win a National Championship. In 2022, he once again helped Georgia win a National Championship with 63 receptions for 942 yards and seven touchdowns.

It is likely Bowers will be one of the more highly selected players in the 2024 NFL Draft. He has great athleticism for the position and is great with the ball in his hands. Georgia even uses Bowers as a rusher because he is so good with the ball. He’ll need to keep adding to his frame to help him sustain blocks, but Bowers has already built his draft stock up fairly high even with those concerns.

J’Tavion Sanders, Texas Longhorns

Sanders didn’t do much his first season on campus, but really showed his skill in 2022. He hauled in 54 passes for 613 yards and five touchdowns. His play helped Texas improve to an 8-5 record. Big things are expected from Sanders in 2023.

At 6-foot-4 and 256 pounds, Sanders has solid size for a tight end. He moves well for his size, as he has good athleticism. Sanders can improve on his blocking, as he tends to be a body catcher, and can make more contested catches in 2023.

Other Draft Prospects to Watch

Jake Briningstool, Clemson Tigers– Briningstool was playing behind Davis Allen the last few seasons, but showed good athleticism. He will need to add more weight to his frame to fill it out and improve his blocking.

Arik Gilbert, Nebraska Cornhuskers- Gilbert has transferred from LSU to Georgia to Nebraska during his college career. He moved to wide receiver at Georgia because of his athleticism and because there were a few talented tight ends already there. Gilbert has athleticism, but needs to get a lot of good tape this season.

Brevyn Spann-Ford, Minnesota Golden Gophers- Spann-Ford has great size for the position at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds. He didn’t produce much in his first two seasons at Minnesota, but did well over the last two seasons.

Austin Stogner, Oklahoma Sooners- Stogner went from Oklahoma to South Carolina to Oklahoma again for this season. He has solid size for the position, but his best season was in 2020 and he needs to refind that form.

Cade Stover, Ohio State Buckeyes- Stover has one good year of production at Ohio State, but doesn’t have elite athleticism and has too many drops. A good season at Ohio State could really help his stock.

Michael Trigg, Ole Miss Rebels- Trigg hasn’t had great production in college, but has solid athleticism. He transferred from USC to Ole Miss last season and is there again in 2022.
