Usually, the fans only have the Overwatch League matches to look forward to weekly. A few teams along with the Overwatch League surprised the community with more content than usual this week. It was great to see that the content was not just a rehashing of on-stream moments. Instead, all the content was focused on the players which was a ray of hope in the desert of team content. Here is a look at the top three pieces of content that were produced this week.
1. OWL BTS

The Overwatch League behind the scenes published their part 1 of the assumed series. This was the long-awaited player-focused content that fans were dying for. Not only was it around the voices of the players but also around multiple teams. The only criticism is that this was only about North American teams. It would be great to see a mixture of both APAC and North American teams represented. The funniest element was who was the biggest prankster. It is elements of the players’ personalities that are not shown in-game. Without in-person LAN events, this can’t even be seen on stage. It was especially nice to see some of the newer names in the scene be marketed for the community to associate the gamer tag with a person. Hopefully, this series continues and diversifies to other teams and regions.
2. NYXL Player Content

The NYXL produced two videos this week that highlighted their team. It was a ‘pick who’ video with four of the players of the NYXL. They answered questions about the team of who best fit certain titles such as the ‘most handsome’. Not only did this content help the community get to know the players more, but it was fun lighthearted content.
The second video was players versus coaches. Some of the highlights of the videos was getting to see the coaches who are mostly behind the scenes. The relationships that Minseong ‘Unknown’ Kim and Daekuk ‘Kuki‘ Kim have with the players shone through by how well they knew each other. This was even seen with the ‘pick who’ when many of the players opted to pick coach Kuki as the answer instead of their fellow teammates. This came out right on time as it was coach Kuki’s birthday on July 13th.
3. Guangzhou Charge – Seungpyo ‘Rio’ Oh Goodbye Video

Unlike the previous two pieces of content, this one has a much sadder feel. It was the APAC Guangzhou Charge’s goodbye video to their main tank Rio. He had been with the Charge for multiple seasons, helping the team. The video was a mix of gameplay throughout the seasons as well as behind the scene content. So many teams just put out a banner that announces the player is departing the team. It was nice to see the Charge give Rio a video that highlighted what he had brought to the team throughout the season. Though there was little dialogue, the video showed how Rio brightened the atmosphere and was hard working. It would be great to see more teams take initiative and do goodbye montages or videos instead of an announcement post.

Other than the Overwatch League’s content many teams are not participating in the creation of content. It was great to see this week how teams who were not in the Midseason Madness were using the time to craft some content for the fans. The fans were fed well and can only hope that this continues on into the ladder half of the season.
