Friday, November 11

On Friday night Round Six will open via one of the A-League’s most historical and fiery Derbies, with Adelaide United taking on the Melbourne Victory. And with second spot on the line for each of the two longstanding rivals, Hindmarsh Stadium will be buzzing by the time this intense encounter rolls around.

That buzz is only aided by Adelaide having won 4-2 last round against the ‘Green & Black’ and the Victory having thoroughly beaten the Jets 4-0, both within the AAMI Park premises. Craig Goodwin highlighted why he was recently named as a traveller to Qatar, putting a rocket past Jamie Young on the 22-minute mark into the bottom-left corner. Meanwhile rival Midfielder Luis Nani tormented the poor Newcastle defence with two shot assists, 25 accurate passes and a 1X won penalty. Both players proving why they’re still elite Footballers.

This is anybody’s game for the taking. However, with the Victory having no Socceroos named to take centre stage in Qatar when the squad was announced earlier this week, a few of of their players may have a point to prove. Thus giving them a slight competitive advantage over the opposition.

Saturday, November 12

Sixteen goals have been fashioned over the last four, YES FOUR, contests between Melbourne City and the Newcastle Jets. Whilst impressively the Jets have triumphed in three of their previous six encounters vs Patrick Kisnorbo’s Championship aspirers. This match might not possess a bunch of glamour appeal to it, but it’ll sure as hell be entertaining.

City may be sky blue in colour but they saw nothing but gold within AAMI Park last round, as they thumped the Glory 4-0, thanks to a double from recently named World Cup Striker Jamie Maclaren. With those being his 6th and 7th strikes of the new campaign. Meanwhile the Jets failed to fire at the exact same venue, registering 0/9 shots on target in their poor 4-0 display versus the Victory. That being a performance I’m sure they’d rather forget in a hurry. One-star rating!

As much as I’d like to discuss how Newcastle have vastly improved this season and are fielding a competitive team, this match has a Melbourne dub written all over it, on top of it, underneath it and even side-to-side of it. While in the event that Kisnorbo rests Maclaren, City still ooze more then enough class in what should be an easy victory headed their way.

It started off with “And dreams have come true in Sky Blue” and continued on with him openly chanting the f-word against the club in which he won a total of seven trophies competing for. Suffice to say Serbian Midfielder Milos Ninkovic has had quite the ride. Now placed in a brand new and rejuvenated Wanderers team under the guidance of Marko Rudan, he’ll be looking to give as good as he gets in the Sydney Derby against his ex-employers, in this all-eyes-will-be-watching affair.

Both teams head into their Derby encounter having leaked three goals a piece last round. For the hosts Sydney, they went down 3-1 to Brisbane in while what was a shock result, also wasn’t quite fully unexpected either. As Paulo Retre’s stupid 81st-minute red card just further added to their woes. As for the ‘Red & Black’, a decisive 15-minute period from the 66th through to the 81st-minute saw them leak three strikes against the Mariners and in-turn give up the game. As ex-Bull turned Mariner Michael Ruhs gave the ‘Red & Black a good what for, with two clinical strikes to his name. Both teams now have a chance at immediate redemption in this spicy encounter.

Ninkovic will play out of his skin, as he’s done all season long, that much is guaranteed! His five shot assists are the perfect example of that. Whilst Calem Nieuwenhof, the former young ‘Sky Blue’ has had a stellar start to the campaign as well, averaging 89-minutes per match so far for Western Sydney. And when you throw in Jack Rodwell potentially debuting for Sydney against the team that brought him to Australian shores, then you have an all-in fight on your hands. As always expect the Sydney Debry to throw up some real fireworks, regardless of who comes out on top.

Sunday, November 13

There’s a rich history of hatred between the Wellington Phoenix and Western United. Meanwhile outside of the well-documented and less-than-acrimonious coach and player defections, there’s also the glooming result of the last time these two rivals went head-to-head in New Zealand, a 3-0 thrashing in favour of the ‘Nix’. In one of Wellington’s only home matches during 2021, they shot 10/19 on target balls at the ‘Green & Black’s’ goals. A result they’ll no doubt be looking to replicate against the currently 12th and last-placed side.

Wellington turned on the motors in what was a classy 4-1 thrashing of Macarthur at home last round. Meanwhile Western United were on the other end of the spectrum, with John Aloisi’s reigning champions suffering their fourth defeat of the season, at home, via a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Adelaide. Ben Waine scored his third goal of the campaign with a power-ball effort in the 67th-minute. While for the ‘Green & Black’ their lack of a polished finish and effective finisher cost them BIG TIME, as they still fired away 23 shots throughout the match. If things aren’t pretty for Western United here in Australia, then they’re highly unlikely to get better in a different country altogether (New Zealand).

I just cannot see Western United breaking their ugly losing streak in this clash, no matter which way I look at or view things. Wellington have lost just once from five attempts so far this season and even during that solo defeat they still had 8/24 shots go on target throughout vs Newcastle. Even if the Phoenix play poor, their constant outpoor of attack should be enough to break down the ‘Green & Black’ in one way or another.

Outside of that don’t be afraid to back Ben Waine to score anytime at $2.60 (Bet365)

Central Coast Mariners vs Macarthur FC

3:00PM AEDT, Bluetongue Stadium

If the Central Coast prove triumphant at home versus Macarthur then pending on other results that occurred during the round, they could jump as high as 2nd on the ladder before the World Cup break starts. Working heavily in their favour is the fact that not only have they won seven of their last 10 contests in Gosford, but they’ve also only ever lost to the ‘Bulls’ once, whilst also having produced seven goals over their last two contests against them. Everything looks good to go for Nick Montgomery’s Men here.

The Mariners were easy money at CommBank Stadium last round, as they claimed a comprehensive 3-0 win over the blindsided Wanderers. Meanwhile the ‘Bulls’ fell victim to the Phoenix over in New Zealand, with Dwight Yorke’s side suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat. A Michael Ruhs double in the 66th and 72nd-minutes of the match, just the 13th and 14th goals of the Forward’s professional career, saw his side going from a tight game, to an absolute thrashing of a game. As for Macarthur, they were lacklustre all-round as fan-favourite Lachlan Rose produced their only goal of the match 59-minutes on. Yorke simply must change something, LITERALLY ANYTHING, in order to give his side a real shot against the Central Coast.

If Jason Cummings, Garang Kuol and Danny Vukovic are rested for this match, then of course Macarthur will have a chance. But even if only one of the three sits out then the ‘Bulls’ will be in some real strife in Gosford. The recently selected Socceroos have been amongst the best in the A-League all season long so far and barring an unexpected setback will be well prepared to take care of this seemingly helpless visiting Macarthur team.
