Apeks add kuben as head coach

Jakub “kuben” Gurczynski, a member of the legendary Golden Five lineup and coach of the Polish Virtus.pro squad, will take the reigns of Apeks as head coach.

The news comes as Apeks revamp their lineup after a disappointing season, with Asger “AcilioN” Larsen and Hugo “chawzyyy” Günther moved to the bench in June.

kuben had successful stints as a coach for both VP and MAD Lions

kuben most recently coached the ex-MAD Lions roster that experienced reasonable success in the back-end of 2021, achieving top-four finishes at BLAST Premier Fall Showdown and DreamHack Open November while taking the scalps of teams like G2 and MOUZ in the process.

The Pole will take over the position of head coach from incumbent Pål “Polly” Kammen, who will remain on board as part of the coaching staff.

“My main objective is to establish and retain strong team culture and fundamentals which can last long term and help the team reach its goals faster,” kuben said of the move. “Obviously, qualifying for a Major is a long-term goal which every team dreams of, but I do believe that with such a mix of skillful and experienced players, as well as helpful management, we are going to achieve it faster than everyone expects.”

Apeks experienced a strong start to life with the roster they built in early 2022, finishing in second place at Pinnacle Winter Series 1 and out-placing the likes of Heroic and FURIA to hit a peak rank of No. 28 in the world. Progress then faltered, with the team slipping as low as No. 57 before AcilioN and chawzyyy were moved to the bench.

Apeks is currently:

Norway Joakim “jkaem” Myrbostad
Slovakia Martin “STYKO” Styk
Sweden Tim “nawwk” Jonasson

Poland Jakub “kuben” Gurczynski (coach)

Denmark Asger “AcilioN” Larsen (benched)
Sweden Hugo “chawzyyy” Günther (benched)
