Apex Legends PS5 & Xbox Series X|S version is out today

Apex Legends is being enhanced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the beefed up versions of the game for the current generation consoles coming alongside the Warriors Collection Event.

The upgrade to the new generation has familiar hoops to jump through, even though this is a free to play game. On PS5 you will need to manually find and download the PS5 version of the game (and you’ll want to delete the PS4 version to free up some precious SSD space!), while on Xbox Series X|S it will be delivered as a game update using Xbox Smart Delivery.

You’ve got some technical improvements to look forward to over the back-compatibility versions. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X can boast a full 4K output, higher resolution shadow maps and greater LOD distances. PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S all now boast steadier 60fps gameplay and HDR.

That will actually be massively disappointing for fans of the game that have waited 18 months for more meaningful new console support. It will be down to future updates to offer a 120hz gameplay option, as well as bigger visual and audio improvements than shadow maps and LODs. PS5 players will also have to keep waiting for support of the DualSense adaptive triggers and Haptics.

In other words, this update seems to be doing the basics first, and getting a native version running on the new consoles, before pushing for new heights.

The Warriors Collection event runs from 29th March to 12th April, bringing back 9v9 Control for two weeks, with the Caustic Treatment landmark in Kings Canyon having been converted into a three-point battleground for a new map to spice things up.

There’s also a new Arena map called Drop-Off, set in the automated Hammond Manufacturing Tower at night. Oh, and there’s obviously going to be a new chain of rewards and unlocks, with a reward track of 24 themed event cosmetics that build up to unlocking Crypto’s Heirloom, the Biwon Blade.
