Battlefield 2042, the latest installation into DICE’s FPS franchise, Battlefield, has become the eighth worst reviewed game on Steam.

According to Steam250’s Hall of Shame, Battlefield 2042 ranks just below Rollercoaster Tycoon World, but isn’t quite as bad as Konami’s eFootball 2022. It is the most recent addition to the list, however with eFootball’s launch in Sept. 2021. Some of the titles go back as far as 2011.

Battlefield 2042 has received over 32,000 reviews at the time of writing and has a “Mostly Negative” average according to its Steam storefront listing. Only 30% of the reviews are noted to be positive.

While a few reviewers seem to be taking the opportunity to have fun with the game’s poor status—e.g.: posting a full recipe for Strawberry Cheesecake French Toast (which was good, so thanks!)—the majority of reviews mention the same pain point.

The most common player complaint is the litany of issues facing the title. Everything from crashes to performance issues, poor optimization, and beyond have been cited in the published reviews. Several, coming from longtime fans of the franchise, cite massive disappointment. Some have called it a departure from Battlefield, entirely.

“Ive been a huge Battlefield fan since day one, and this does not feel like battlefield I grow up on, it feels more like CoD with a mix of Battle Royal,” wrote one reviewer with over 90 hours in-game.

“This is by far the worst addition to the franchise,” wrote another with nearly 15 hours total, “Unfortunately, and sad to say, I’m having more fun playing against the hackers in COD than playing Battlefield Running Simulator 2042.”

One review simply reads, “Wtf.”

For their part, DICE did release a day-one patch in an attempt to address the largest glaring issues. That doesn’t appear to have ingratiated them with fans, however.

Those interested to try out Battlefield 2042 can purchase it for Xbox One/Series S|X, PlayStation 4/5, and PC.
