Fresh from winning their second silverware this season Sporting Lisbon travel to Estadio Nacional do Jamor to take on Belenenses Lisbon in an important Primeira Liga action on Wednesday night with kickoff at 23:45.
Belenenses Lisbon had an impressive campaign last term where they finished in the top half with 40 points from their 34 matches. However, Franclim Cavalho’s side has failed to build on that this season as the club has been struggling for form this season and have made such a disappointing campaign and appear to be heading to Primeira Liga 2.
With 12 points collected from their 19 league matches, Belenenses currently are rock bottom in Primeira Liga rankings with six points adrift of safety and head into the match in a poor Primeira Liga form as they have only won one of their last nine matches and are coming off a 1-1 draw against Maritimo Madeira at away in their last league fixture.
Therefore they need to start collecting points on a regular basis if they are to salvage their season, but they face an uphill task this Wednesday as they take on Sporting Lisbon who they haven’t beaten at Nacional do Jamor since 2015 and they have failed to claim a win in their last 11 encounters.
Sporting Lisbon made a strong campaign last term claiming their 19th Primeira Liga title and they did build on that at the start of this season, however, the defending champions have seen their campaign stutter in the recent weeks with two defeats in their last three league fixtures.
The run has left Ruben Amorim’s side trailing leaders Porto by nine points, but with a game in hand. Also they are now just three points above the third-placed Benfica who are currently in a good league form.
However they head into the match in high spirits as they extended their dominance in Portuguese football after claiming a 2-1 win over city rivals Benfica to clinch their fourth Taca da Liga title in their last match on Saturday.
Also they will fancy their chances here as they are in a good away form having won seven, drawn one and lost one of their last nine on the road matches and they have a good record at Estadio Nacional Jamor as during 19 meetings with Belenenses playing at home, Belenenses have won three times, there have been four draws while Sporting have won 12 times and the goal difference is 41-19 in favor of the visitors.
