Without further adieu our final installment of the 2021 season…

Overrated:  Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Welcome back old friend! This isn’t the first time Wake Forest has graced our overrated section but seeing as this is the last Top 10 article, it will be the final time.  Finishing their season 10-2, the Demon Deacons thrive on an explosive pass game with stud QB Sam Hartman as the catalyst.  Wake is 6th in offensive efficiency according to S&P+, but 90th in defensive efficiency, allowing 5.9 yards per play and an 81% defensive red zone scoring %, good for only 51st in the country.

Defensive Disaster

Over their last 4 games Wake is 2-2 with their last win coming against a Boston College team battling illness (10 players were out). Clemson absolutely bullied Wake in the trenches two weeks ago. The Tigers ran for 333 yards and held them to just 36 yards rushing on 31 attempts.  We don’t have Wake in our Top 25 despite the love they receive in the national polls.

Betting Bias

The betting market quickly faded the Demon Deacons early this week, laying anywhere from -1.5 to -2.5 with Pittsburgh for the ACC Championship game. It is worth noting there was buyback on Wake +3 Wednesday morning amid speculation Pittsburgh had the flu bug roaming through the locker room impacting Kenny Pickett.  We’ve stated before how proud the program should be with Clawson and Hartman leading them to an ACC Championship game. Eventually every team reaches a ceiling and that could be the case for Wake with average talent and a leaky defense.

Underrated: Miami Hurricanes

At 7-5 awaiting their bowl assignment was not a spot the Hurricanes expected to be in before the season. Especially when your win total opened at 9.5. After a tumultuous start, Miami rattled off wins in 5 of their last 6 games that included triumphs against N.C. State and on the road against Pittsburgh.  Even last week despite sharp money nibbling at +21.5 on Duke, Miami easily exceeded oddsmaker expectations in dominant fashion.  While boosters and administration may ultimately quit on Manny Diaz, it’s clear players haven’t. Miami is a 4th and 14 conversion against FSU, a missed 33-yard field goal against Virginia, and a batted pass against North Carolina, from being a 10-win team with a third string quarterback for a majority of the season.

Heir Apparent

The offense has really come alive with freshman Tyler Van Dyke slinging the rock. He’s thrown for 25 TD’s to only 6 INT’s, with a QB rating of 160.1 (Top 15 in the country).  It also doesn’t hurt that their offensive line finished 1st in the ACC in PFF’s offensive pass blocking grade. There appears to be a lot of transition ahead for the Hurricanes with OC Rhett Lashlee headed to SMU and Manny Diaz’ job security in flux.  Nonetheless, we have Miami inside our Top 30 with the regular season officially in the books
