Bet The Board College Football Week 12 Power Ratings

Written by @Watt_05

Spoiler alert! Our top 3 remain unchanged after last week’s results. Unfortunately for Oklahoma (and anyone with a National Championship futures ticket) that ship has sailed. The Sooners fell to #5 after their uninspired loss to Baylor. Michigan moves up to #4 with their impressive road win at Penn State. There’s also a bit of shuffling at the bottom of the ladder as a team clad in green and gold makes its first appearance.

We don’t always give love to the smaller conferences, especially ones out West. Guess what? That trend continues this week as our overrated side comes from the Mountain West.  Our underrated team is a program we loved coming into the year that’s taken all season to find its proper footing and sit in firm control of their own conference championship destiny.

Away we go…

Overrated:  San Diego State Aztecs

San Diego State may have cracked the Top 25 this week, but we’re here to tell you they don’t even belong in the Top 50! At 9-1 and in 1st place in their half of the Mountain West, one can see why the Aztecs have garnered respect from the rankings committee.  However, watch one half of SDSU offensive football and you’ll understand why their ranking is fool’s gold. Maybe we’re having a hard time quantifying punter value, but this is not a Top 25 team.

Paper Tigers

Let’s first start with the schedule, which is outside the Top 100.  SDSU’s best win all year came at home in overtime against a Utes team that made a quarterback change and looks much different now.  SP+ has this offense OUTSIDE the Top 100 in overall efficiency, averaging a measly 4.8 yards per play with a 54% completion rate (32.80% 3rd down completion rate) good for 114th in the country.  The defense looks strong metrically but when they have stepped up in class against Utah and Fresno State, the Aztecs surrendered 30+ points.  Let’s not forget our underrated team this week, Utah, was an 8 point road favorite at San Diego State earlier this season for good reason.

Underrated: Utah Utes

After rattling off three straight wins against Pac-12 foes, Utah has worked their way back into the Top 25 at #23.  Utah boasts a really impressive team on both sides of the football, ranking inside the Top 30 in both offensive and defensive efficiency.  Since the transition from Charlie Brewer to Cameron Rising at QB, the Utes season has undergone a seismic shift.  If there is any indication of how oddsmakers and professional sports bettors view the Utes, look no further than this weekend’s matchup against the #3 ranked Oregon Ducks.

Mind the Markets

Utah opened as a 3-point favorite and trending upwards at most shops including Fanduel.  Utah is a net +1.3 yards per play this season and is averaging 5.9 yards per carry, good for 2nd in the nation.  The Utes hope star RB Tavion Thomas is ready this week as he sat out against Arizona to heal up for a big matchup against Oregon.  If the Utah defensive front can hang with Oregon’s physicality on offense they’ll open more eyes Saturday night.
