The New England Patriots can take a big step toward winning the AFC East when the host the Buffalo Bills at 1:00 pm ET Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The Patriots (9-5) hold a one-game lead over the second-place Bills (8-6) and a win would give New England a two-game lead over Buffalo while also holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. New England would win the division outright if they beat Buffalo and the Miami Dolphins lose or tie against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

The Patriots’ seven-game winning streak ended last week with a 27-17 loss to the Colts in Indianapolis. The Bills are 4-5 since beginning the season with four wins in five games.

In a game that will be televised by CBS, the Patriots are small home favorites.

Bills Offense vs Patriots Defense

The key for the Bills this season has been getting the lead early. They are 7-0 in game in which they have never trailed but 1-6 when they have had to play catch up.

As usual, quarterback Josh Allen dictates the offense.

He was able to play through the effects of a sprained foot last week in a 31-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers by throwing for 210 yards and three touchdowns, though he was limited to 24 rushing yards.

The Bills will be without two of their top wide receivers as Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis are on the COVID-19/reserve list. However, Buffalo is expected to get receiver Emmanuel Sanders (knee) back after he missed last week’s game.

Patriots Offense vs Bills Defense

The Patriots seemingly reverted to the single wing days when they beat the Bills 14-10 on Week 13 on a windy night in Buffalo. Rookie quarterback Mac Jones threw just three passes and Damien Harris had 111 of New England’s 222 rushing yards.

The Patriots will likely try to establish the run again considering the Bills have allowed a total of 510 yards on the ground in their last three games. Harris, though, is questionable because of a hamstring injury that kept him out of last week’s game.

While the Bills lead the NFL in total defense and pass defense, they are 16th among the 32 teams against the run. They might also again be without run-stuffing lineman Star Lotulelei, who has been away from the team tending to a personal matter.

Jones leads all rookie quarterbacks with 3,168 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. He needs two TDs to become the 15th rookie in NFL history to reach 3,000 yards passing and 20 scores.

Bills vs Patriots Recent History

New England is 36-7 against the Bills since the start of the 20th century but just 1-2 without Tom Brady at quarterback.

The Patriots have a 39-22 record all-time in Boston, including 16-3 at Gillette Stadium. New England has also swept the season series in 16 of Bill Belichick’s 22 seasons as coach.

Bills vs Patriots Injury Report

Bills starting right guard Jon Feliciano and backup Cody Ford are both on the COVID-19/reserve list along with Beasley, Davis and offensive tackle Dion Dawkins.

In addition to Harris’ availability being in question, Patriots RB2 Rhamondre Stevenson was placed on Covid-19/reserve. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor (concussion) will also miss the game.

Bills vs Patriots Prediction

Until last week’s hiccup at Indianapolis, the Patriots were playing as well as any team in the league. Conversely, the Bills have been mired in mediocrity for nearly three months.

Look for the Patriots to sweep the season series – just like in so many season past.
