Boston Red Sox Trade Chicago White Sox for Reese McGuire

The Boston Red Sox have acquired catcher Reese McGuire from the Chicago White Sox for reliever Jake Diekman according to ESPN. Boston will also receive a player to be named later or cash considerations.

McGuire, 27, is batting .225 with 10 RBIs this season. He has played five MLB seasons with the Blue Jays and White Sox with this being his first in Chicago.

The Red Sox had a void at catcher for a few minutes after trading Christian Vazquez to the Astros. With deals to ship off solid players and acquire others, it is hard to see the strategy the Red Sox are trying to employ.

Diekman is an 11-year veteran who had pitched for the Phillies, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Royals, A’s and Red Sox. He has a 4.23 ERA this season in 44 appearances.

Chicago is currently 51-50 and looks like they are trying to strengthen their bullpen for the playoff push. They currently have a bullpen ERA of 4.03, which ranks in the bottom half of the league.
