Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War adds remastered WMD map

Treyarch has shared details on its first big Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War update of 2022, which includes a remaster of a fan favourite map.

The new Cold War update will be rolling out today across all platforms including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, also introducing the Vargo 52 assault rifle (available in multiplayer and Zombies).

Of course, the main highlight is the remastered WMD map that first debuted in 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and has since appeared in BO4. The abandoned soviet base makes for one of the series’ best larger scale maps with tightly packed interiors and some decent vantage points for sniping.

Meanwhile, here’s a little more about the latest addition to Cold War’s arsenal:

The Vargo 52 is one mean weapon, and it’s particularly effective where versatile equipment reigns – and in Zombies, it can be one of the most devastating assault rifles in the game with the right suite of attachments. Here’s its in-game description: Full-auto assault rifle. Good damage at mid-range with a fast fire rate. Improved muzzle velocity and reliable handling for steady firing control.

In our Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War review, we scored the sequel a 7/10:

“Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a decent entry in the series, but it feels like it doesn’t quite know what it wants to be. The campaign is full of underused ideas, while the multiplayer misses some of the magical charm of Modern Warfare, opting for faster paced aggressive battles which just don’t feel as satisfying. While still enjoyable, Black Ops Cold War fails to recapture the magic of Black Ops 1 and 2.”

With Microsoft having acquired Activision Blizzard in a landmark purchase, there have been worries that future Call of Duty games will no longer appear on PlayStation consoles. Thankfully, that won’t be the case according to Microsoft:

“To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision. And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love.”

This year’s Call of Duty has yet to be announced though there’s a very good chance Infinity Ward is working on a Modern Warfare 2. Meanwhile, there are reports suggesting that Call of Duty will skip 2023, making it the first year a new game in the series hasn’t debuted since 2005. However, with each instalment enjoying multi-year support, it’s a move that has been long overdue.
