CDL 2022 Championships – Day 2 Recap and Exclusive Interviews

Here’s everything from day two of CDL 2022 Championships. Featuring exclusive post-match interviews.

The Call of Duty League Championships continued for day two following a long day of game fives to kick off the event. With four game fives in a row yesterday, we moved onto day two, with four more incredible matches.

New York Subliners 3-2 London Royal Ravens

The London Royal Ravens began their elimination bracket run with a 250-214 Gavutu Hardpoint victory over the New York Subliners. Nastie was unbelievable on this map, putting up 30 kills and a 1.43 K/D as the Royal Ravens took a 1-0 lead in the series. Nastie continued this impressive performance with a 2.25 K/D in the following Desert Siege Search and Destroy. London has been the best Desert Siege team in the game all year, suffering just one loss. However, teams continue to play them on it, and continue to regret that decision.

As we returned to Gavutu for map three, the London Royal Ravens lost their chance at a 3-0 through a 3-1 Gavutu Control defeat. The New York Subliners knew how to defend the points perfectly, while Hydra dominated the map with a 1.26 K/D to get NYSL back into this series. NYSL forced a game five with a dominant Berlin Hardpoint where they came out on top with a 250-173 victory. The whole team performed exceptionally well as they outslayed the London Royal Ravens by a massive 34 kills to tie the series 2-2, and get ever closer to the reverse sweep.

New York Subliners completed the reverse sweep with a 6-4 Berlin Search and Destroy victory to close out the series. After sending former teammates Gismo and Afro home from Champs, Hydra told ESTNN it was a “bitter sweet” victory. “I’m obviously happy because I won, I’m not going to be sad. But I saw Afro and I was like damn, I was just playing with that guy”.

Toronto Ultra 3-1 Boston Breach

Toronto Ultra went into this series facing elimination from Champs. With such an up and down season, Toronto are looking to end it on a high, and they started in the right way with a 250-170 Tuscan Hardpoint win. Bance and Cammy were the main slayers here, with Bance putting up 33 kills, while Cammy dropped a 1.33 K/D as Toronto went 1-0 up in this elimination series.

Boston Breach bounced back with a dominant 6-0 Desert Siege Search and Destroy. Toronto Ultra’s Search and Destroy has lacked in recent matches, and Boston took full advantage, with Vivid and Nero running riot on the map to tie the series. Nero’s 9/2 performance was the best in the lobby, as he continues to impress in his rookie year. A back and forth Berlin Control saw Toronto Ultra come out on top with a 3-2 victory, taking a 2-1 lead in the series. Cammy impressed, putting up a 1.20 K/D before going up another level in the following Berlin Hardpoint, dropping a 1.64 in their 250-218 victory.

Toronto Ultra have also focused on the grassroots of Call of Duty esports, fielding two Challengers rosters. MarkyB spoke on this, “I think it gives us an advantage, we scrimmed our academy team before the game while Boston came in cold,” he told ESTNN.

Atlanta FaZe 3-2 Seattle Surge

Pred was announced as Rookie of the Year ahead of this match, while Cellium was named regular season MVP. The two went head-to-head in this matchup, and Rookie of the Year Pred let the Galen Centre know he is here to stay in map one. Atlanta FaZe held a 244-204 lead, and Seattle Surge executed an incredible comeback, with Pred taking down three FaZe players in a row to close out the map.

Atlanta FaZe bounced back with two maps on the bounce to bring the series to 2-1, before Seattle Surge pulled off yet another remarkable comeback in map four. Sib played a nice spot in p4 on Berlin, waiting for the final hill to pop before he took down multiple FaZe players from behind, winning the map and forcing a map five. This map five went the distance, with Atlanta FaZe closing it out to win the series 3-2.

Tuscan p5 to p1 has been a tough rotation for every single team this year, however, FaZe have possibly struggled the most. “It’s just the way the map is. It’s really tough to hold it so a lot of teams lose out on it.”

LA Thieves 3-0 OpTic Texas

LA Thieves went into this series with an unbelievable confidence. Don’t chall me on Gavutu from earlier in the season came back for this map one, and it rang true with LA Thieves dominating, putting OpTic in the 100-point club. Envoy didn’t have to do much in this 250-58 victory, his 2.14 K/D came with just 13 kills in the entire map as LAT went 1-0 up in these winner’s match.

Map two was much closer than the first, with this Berlin Search and Destroy ending 6-4. Yet again, this was in favor of the LA Thieves, with Drazah taking over the map and putting up 13 kills and a 2.17 K/D as the Thieves took a 2-0 lead over OpTic Texas in this series. The Thieves continued their dominance over OpTic Texas, and won the following Gavutu Control 3-2 to take the series in a 3-0 sweep.

Gavutu was one of the LA Thieves’ best maps at the start of the year. While they had a rough patch in the middle of the season, they seem to be back to their best. “We lost confidence, but I think we’re back to our best on Gav now”, Kenny told ESTNN in a post-match press conference.
