Group D: RagnaroK and Cure advance – VOD

Group D brought even more surprises to the RO20 as (Wiki)RagnaroK built upon his strong Season 1 run by advancing in first place. Proxy Hatcheries had figured heavily into RagnaroK’s Season 1 success, and he deployed it twice against (Wiki)Cure in his initial match. But it was actually RagnaroK’s great macro play that led him to a 2-0 victory, as Cure held off the proxy-Hatchery openers without losing much of an advantage. RagnaroK dropped those cheesy openers entirely against (Wiki)Trap in the winners’ match, outplaying the top Protoss with mostly standard play.

Unfortunately for Trap, he paid the price for being unable to take down RagnaroK as he was eventually eliminated after losing to Cure in the decider match. Alongside ByuN, he suffered the painful fate of going 4-4 in maps but still being unable to advance. American Protoss (Wiki)Astrea, who had managed to immediately qualify for Code S after returning to Korea for training, was eliminated in last place with losses to Trap and Cure..

Group E: Maru and Creator advance – VOD

Group E ended up being the only RO20 group that went according to popular expectations, with (Wiki)Maru dominating the competition to take first place and (Wiki)Creator edging out (Wiki)Solar for second place. After a disappointing Season 1 where he was eliminated in the RO10, Maru came back with a vengeance by winning convincing 2-0 victories against both Solar and Creator. Predictably, he took one map against Solar with his infamous turtle style TvZ, but he also got to put on a defensive masterclass against Creator as well. While last season reminded us that Maru can be inconsistent at times, he definitely looked like a top-tier title contender in his Group E games.

While Creator was thoroughly bested by Maru, he did look rather solid in victories over (Wiki)KeeN and Solar as he advanced in second place. Though his performances in online competitions have been the cause for some slight concern, he played well enough in the RO20 to suggest his finals run last season was no flash in the pan.
