College Football Betting for Week 3: Sure Winners

We are riding high after Week 2 of the 2022 college football season. Oregon State, Texas Tech, BYU and Iowa State all emerged as winners. There were some shocking outcomes as well, such as Appalachian State beating Texas A&M and Marshall beating Notre Dame, with both upsets coming on the road. It’s unlikely that the Sun Belt Conference will suddenly be elevated to power conference status, but the Aggies and the Fighting Irish have both likely seen the end of their College Football Playoff hopes this season. Texas almost threw another wrench in the playoff scenarios by pushing Alabama hard, but the Crimson Tide left Austin with a 20-19 win. What can we expect to see in Week 3? BYU Cougars (+4) at Oregon Ducks (3:30 pm ET, FOX)

This line opened at Oregon -6.5, and it has ping-ponged around since then. Its most recent movement is back toward the Ducks as these two teams will meet for the first time since the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl. Oregon took a massive 49-3 loss against Georgia in Week 1 before taking out their frustrations on FCS foe Eastern Washington, rolling to a 70-14 annihilation. Now they face a BYU team that routed South Florida on the road in their opener and then edged Baylor at home in overtime on Saturday.

BYU actually has a four-game road winning streak going, and the passing game is clicking. Jaren Hall has a 67.6% pass completion rate and has picked up 522 yards and three touchdown passes against just one interception. His most prolific targets have been Keanu Hill and Chase Roberts (241 receiving yards, 2 TD). The ground game is putting up 199 yards per contest, and the defense has limited the opposition to 20.5 points per game.

Oregon, on the other hand, has not lost at Autzen Stadium since September 2018. Bo Nix bounced back from a poor opener and now has a 70 percent completion rate with five touchdown passes against two interceptions. The Ducks are permitting 31.5 points and 379 yards per contest, although Justin Flowe leads the team with a dozen tackles. BYU has covered just once in their last five road games – but four times in their last five games played in September. Oregon has only covered twice in their last seven non-conference games, and that shellacking of Eastern Washington is one of the two covers. BYU to cover.

Penn State Nittany Lions (-3) at Auburn Tigers (3:30 pm ET, CBS)

Penn State rolled over Ohio U. last time out, 46-10. Sean Clifford has now thrown five touchdown passes with just a single pick, picking up 495 yards. Nicholas Singleton leads the team with 210 yards on the ground, and Clifford’s top target has been Mitchell Tinsley, with 10 receptions for 111 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Parker Washington and Brenton Strange have gotten in the mix as well. Curtis Jacobs leads the defense with 11 total tackles.

Auburn beat San Jose State in Week 2, 24-16, and T.J. Finley has bounced back with 279 yards and a touchdown (while also throwing three picks). Tarik Bigsby leads the team with 198 yards on the ground, with three touchdowns, and Jarquez Hunter has picked up four touchdowns on the ground. Ja’Varrius Johnson leads the team in receiving yards with 158; Cam Riley leads the defense with 20 tackles (13 solo), and the defense has registered four sacks.

Penn State has covered in six of their last seven September games but just once in their last seven contests against SEC opposition. Auburn has only covered one in their last seven contests against Big Ten teams – and just once in their last five games at home. I don’t see Penn State thriving on the road here. Auburn to cover.
