College Football Betting for Week 5: Sure Winners

We just finished another week in the 2022 college football season, which means another set of surprises. Former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez had transferred to Kansas State, and he outdueled Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel in a 41-34 win. Texas A&M held off Arkansas in Arlington for a 23-21 win. Texas went up to Texas Tech and lost in overtime, which means that Oklahoma and Texas, set to depart the Big 12 for the SEC, are tied for last in the Big 12. Miami (FL) will fall far out of the top 25 after losing to Middle Tennessee State, and Tennessee beat Florida for just the second time in the last four decades. Oh – and Kansas beat Houston to go to 4-0. What can we expect in Week 5? Read on to get some of our college football betting insights.

NCAA News: Sure Winners for Week 5

Saturday, October 1

Kentucky Wildcats (+5.5) at Ole Miss Rebels
(12:00 pm ET, ESPN)

These two SEC teams meet as unbeatens on Saturday. Kentucky has a conference win, as they beat Florida on the road in Week 2, while this will be Ole Miss’ conference opener. Kentucky beat Northern Illinois last week, but things got hairy in the 31-23 game. That came after a 31-0 shellacking of FCS foe Youngstown State the week before. Against NIU, Will Levis threw four scoring passes. The game was tied at halftime, but Levis threw a 70-yard bomb to Barion Brown just 58 seconds into the third period. He found Tayvion Robinson for a 40-yard touchdown later on. Overall, he went 18 of 26 for 303 yards but took five sacks.

Ole Miss rolled through its first three games, beating Troy, Central Arkansas and Georgia Tech with relative ease, but a visit from Tulsa last week put them behind the eight-ball, and they had to rally for a 35-27 win. Tulsa went up 14-7, and then quarterback Jaxson Dart and tailback Quinshon Judkins accounted for four scores in the second quarter, as the Rebels turned a 14-7 deficit into a 35-14 lead going into the locker room. Dart went 13 of 24 for 154 yards and ran the ball 13 times for 116 yards. Judkins carried the ball 27 times for 140 yards. Both of these teams have played fairly soft non-conference schedules, but Kentucky’s big win at Florida tells us that they already know how to win big conference games on the road, and Dart is not the dangerous arm that Matt Corral was for Ole Miss last year. Ole Miss to win and cover.

N.C. State Wolfpack (+7) at Clemson Tigers
(7:30 pm ET, ABC)

Clemson’s offense is back this season; through four games, they have put up at least 35 points in each contest. That included a 51-45 win in double overtime at Wake Forest in Week 4 that called into question the claims that Clemson has an elite defense. That D did stand tall in double overtime, as Nate Wiggins got a hand on Sam Hartman’s pass on fourth down, ending the game. D.J. Uiagalelei continues to shine statistically this season, throwing for 372 yards and five touchdowns, including a 25-yard strike to Davis Allen at the start of the second overtime.

We haven’t thought much about North Carolina State since they should have lost their opener to East Carolina. In that game, the Pirates had a chance to tie the game with an extra point and another chance to win the game with a chip-shot field goal, but they missed both and lost by one. A rout over Charleston Southern (an FCS school) followed, as did home wins over Texas Tech and Connecticut. The win over Texas Tech became a lot more impressive after the Red Raiders beat Texas this weekend, but the Wolfpack get their first real test of 2022 down in Death Valley this weekend. Against Connecticut, Devin Leary threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns, starting with a 75-yard bomb on the first offensive play of the game. Leary ended up 32 of 44, and the four scores went to four different receivers. Overall, N.C. State scored the first five times they had the ball to go up, 31-0. It might be trendy to see N.C. State hanging with Clemson this week, but the Tigers should recalibrate their defense and be ready. Clemson to win and cover.
