College Football: Three Games to consider for Betting on Week 5

Just about all of college football is immersed in conference play by this point in the season, and the sports betting lines should have greater accuracy now that we see which teams are living up to the preseason hype – and which teams are going against expectations, either to the good or the not-so-good. Sometimes the greatest value comes from the Group of Five matchups, especially when the books aren’t quite as solid on their research as they are for the more popular Power Five conference showdowns. Take a look at our three-way College Football parlay for this weekend, so that you can multiply your winnings even more with multiple bets.

NCAA News: Parlay Picks for Week 5

Tulane Green Wave (+125) at Houston Cougars (Saturday, 7:00 pm ET, ESPN)

So the Houston Cougars belong in the Big 12? They needed overtime to beat UT-San Antonio. They lost at Texas Tech – and got routed at home by Kansas. Then they hosted crosstown rival Rice, a lowly Conference USA opponent – and only won by seven. Next up is a visit from Tulane to start American Athletic Conference play. The Green Wave comes in with a 3-1 record – and they just won at Kansas State. Tulane’s passing game is picking up a terrific 9.4 yards per attempt, and tailback Tyjae Spears is also posting career-best numbers. On defense, Tulane ranked 120th in the nation against the pass in 2021. This year, they are in the top ten in several metrics. Can Tulane take advantage of Houston’s malaise? We say yes. Tulane to win.

Ohio University Bobcats at Kent State Golden Flashes (-11) (3:30 pm ET, ESPN+)

You can’t say that Kent State is dodging the hard games this year. Their non-conference slate has included trips to Washington, Oklahoma and Georgia. Against the top-ranked Bulldogs, Kent State put up 22 points on an allegedly elite defense. Their defense has been serviceable given the gap in talent. Ohio U. permitted 38, 46, 43 and 52 points in their first four games. While the 46 came against Penn State and the 43 came against Iowa State, the 52 came against Fordham (an FCS school). Now the pass defense is dead last among FBS schools, permitting 376.3 yards per game, and the run defense is ranked #92. It is true that Ohio has Kurtis Rourke, who put up career numbers as the Bobcats hung 59 on Fordham to get that tight win, but Kent State quarterback Collin Schlee is the sixth-best rated passer in the nation based on the QBR metric used by ESPN. This line opened at Kent State -7 and has steadily climbed since. I would jump on board before it crosses 14. Kent State to cover.

Georgia Southern Eagles at Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (O/U 64) (6:00 pm ET, ESPN_)

Before you add this to your parlay, check out the injury updates on Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall. He was limited in practice on Wednesday, but if he can play, he will get to torch that Georgia Southern D. They have permitted 5.7 yards per carry on the ground, ranked #123 in the FBS, and their Sack Rate ranks #125. McCall has an 11:1 TD:INT ratio so far this season, completing 70 percent of his passes, and he has also run for two scores. Georgia Southern has gotten three 300+ yard games out of quarterback Kyle Vantrease, who has contributed 10 touchdowns in the first four games. Jalen White averages 5.4 yards per carry, and the Coastal Carolina defense is also, shall we say, in need of improvement. The Chanticleers started their season with Army, Gardner-Webb, Buffalo and Georgia State, but they rank #83 in third-down defense and have permitted more than 26 poitns per game. They alow 7.9 yards per passing attempt, and they rank #103 in the nation in giving up passing plays of at least 20 yards, with 16 surrendered. They rank #76 in red-zone defense, meaning that other teams are finding the end zone easily. Take the over.
