They have back backtracked on their decision to add microtransactions which were quickly labelled by the Avengers community as pay-to-win.

Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors could be purchased as consumable DLC, temporarily increasing the amount of experience and in-game currency earned in Marvel’s Avengers.

Marvel’s Avengers cross-play and 5 other improvements we need

This update follows a sustained backlash from fans. Crystal Dynamics had previously promised (to the rapturous applause of an E3 audience) that there would be no gameplay DLC.

Having recently joined Xbox Game Pass, there is speculation that microtransactions were added so Square could monetise this influx of new players.

Here’s the official statement in full:

We apologise for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace. We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don’t offer power directly.

After considering your feedback, we have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase. They will continue to be earnable rewards and those already owned are still usable.

We hope that this can be the first step in rebuilding your confidence in us as a team.

It continues to be our goal to make the very best game possible. Thank you for being a part of the Marvel’s Avengers community.

What’s next for Marvel’s Avengers? As we push into Autumn and through to the end of the year, we’ll gain access to the Klaw raid. This is the first raid coming to Marvel’s Avengers, designed for four players.

What about Spider-Man? Right now, developer Crystal Dynamics haven’t set a firm release date for its Spider-Man expansion though he’s due to arrive by the end of 2021. According to the developer’s roadmap for Marvel’s Avengers, this will happen during the autumn or early winter.
