A year after advancing to the Sweet 16, #9 seed Creighton returns to the NCAA Tournament to face #8 seed San Diego State in a Midwest Region first round game at 7:27 p.m. ET Thursday at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Creighton (22-11) lost to Villanova 54-48 last Saturday in the Big East Tournament championship game after winning three of its previous four games and nine of 11.

San Diego State (23-8) was edged by Boise State 53-52 last Saturday in the Mountain West Conference championship game, ending the Aztecs’ six-game winning streak.

The winner moves on to play Kansas or Texas Southern in the March Madness bracket.

San Diego State is a two-point favorite in a game that airs on TruTV and, as a -137 moneyline favorite, has an implied win probability of 57.81%.

Creighton Betting Outlook

Creighton has been the winning side against the number in its last three games and is 17-14-2 against the spread this season.

Senior forward Ryan Hawkins, a transfer from Division II Wayne State (Neb.), has been a steadying influence for a team that returned no starters from last season’s team that won two games in the NCAAs.

He also dresses cool for breakfast.

Hawkins is averaging 13.9 points and 7.8 rebounds a game, both teams highs. However, Villanova held him to two points in the Big East title game on 1-of-10 shooting.

Sophomore center Ryan Kalkbrenner shined in a losing effort with 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. It was his 11th consecutive game scoring in double figures.

The Big East Defensive Player of the Year is averaging 13.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots.

Senior guard Alex O’Connell added 10 points but made just 2 of 11 three-point attempts. He has averages of 11.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

Creighton shot just 32.8% (19 of 58), including an abysmal 10.3% (3 of 29) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays missed all 13 three tries in the first half but trailed only 19-18 at the break.

But the Bluejays are ready to move on.

Conversely, Creighton played strong defense as it held Villanova to 19 for 57 (33.3%) from the field and 8 for 25 (32.0%) on threes.

Creighton is 4-3 since losing guard Ryan Nembhard to season-ending wrist surgery. The Big East Freshman of the Year averaged 11.3 points and 4.4 assists.

They enter the first round with +4100 (average) odds to reach the Final Four out of the Midwest Region, a ways behind San Diego State (+2400).

San Diego State Betting Outlook

The Aztecs are 17-14 ATS in 2021-22 with 19 of their 31 games going under the total. San Diego State has held 20 of its 31 opponents to less than 60 points.

Senior guard Matt Bradley is the only San Diego State player scoring in double figures. He has averages of 17.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in his first season since transferring from California.

Bradley had 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss to Boise State but made just 6 of 17 field goal attempts and had a rough tournament overall. He scored just 31 points in three games on 10-for-31 (32.3%).

San Diego State did get a surprisingly strong offensive effort from sophomore guard Lamont Butler. He had 16 points after reaching double digits only once in the previous 16 games.

Down by one point, the Aztecs had a chance to win the game at the end. However, Bradley and senior guard Trey Pulliam missed shots in the final seconds as San Diego State lost for just the second time in its last 13 games.

Like Creighton, the Aztecs are moving on.

San Diego State shot just 35.1% (20 of 57) while holding Boise State to 38.3% (18 of 47). The Aztecs also limited the Broncos to 27.8% (5 of 18) from deep.

Creighton vs San Diego State Prediction

These two programs, who have split all six all-time meeting, are pretty much tournament staples. Creighton has been to the Big Dance in 10 of coach Greg McDermott’s 12 seasons and San Diego State has been there nine of the last 13 years.

The Aztecs rolled to an 83-52 neutral-court victory in the last meeting in 2018-19. This should be a much closer game, so let’s play the moneyline for a slight upset.
