Deep Rock Galactic: How To Play The Driller Class

Deep Rock Galactic is home to some of the most unique and engaging class design in all of gaming. And while every class is a blast to play, the Driller is perhaps the most difficult to master. Don’t let this stop you though, because the reward is well worth it!

As the Driller, your team will be constantly relying on you for quick access, escapes, and explosions, so it is vital to adapt quickly to every situation. Without further ado, here is how to play the Driller class.

Primary

Cryo Cannon: The Cryo Cannon is easily the most effective primary weapon for the Driller. It will, however, require at least some basic teamwork. When compared to both the flamethrower and the sludge pump, the Cryo Cannon has the lowest damage-per-second of the three. But, the freezing effects of the weapon make any enemy in its way take a massive health debuff, allowing them to die in just a few bullets. So, before you begin freezing a hoard of bugs, let your local Gunner or Engineer know! Remember: communication is key in Deep Rock Galactic.

Secondary

Plasma Charger: Truthfully, the Plasma Charger just barely beats out the Subata 120–mostly thanks to its ability to charge up a devastating explosive round. It is worth mentioning though, that for newer players, the Subata 120 is a little more beginner friendly.

Throwable

Impact Axe: This one comes with an asterisk. If you choose the flamethrower as your primary weapon, the neurotoxin grenades are the way to go. They essentially flood an area with explosive gas, leaving it up to the Driller to ignite it for massive damage. The impact axe, however, is the single best throwable in the game when it comes to fighting bosses. It will stick into the surface of whatever it hits, and it rapidly drains health when it hits vital areas. Just don’t forget to pick up any axes you missed after the fight!

Being A Team Player

In a game about mining, the Driller is no doubt going to be needed by everyone on the team. Here is how to best synergize with each class as the Driller.

Gunner

When working with the Gunner, a great technique is to bottleneck the enemies into a tunnel and allow the Gunner to do his work. This can be made even more effective by using the Driller’s cryo cannon to freeze the area.

Sometimes, the environment won’t allow the Gunner to place their zipline in the desired area. This is easily countered by drilling out an area to provide a usable platform.

Engineer

If you are looking for a high risk, high reward strategy, it is possible to dig at an angle and have the Engineer block of the entrance. This will delay the swarm, but only lasts so long. Just be sure that you have plenty of fuel for your drills, or you might get trapped down there. Another strategy worth noting is that the Engineer’s Breach Cutters work exceptionally well in tunnels; they can pierce through an unlimited amount of bugs.

Scout

It is important to communicate with the Scout before the mission begins since both classes have cryo equipment. Usually, it is wise to not bring the same tools. While the Scout and Driller don’t exactly have the best synergy, a good technique is to have the Scout attract the enemies into a single, drilled out area by the Driller.

A Successful Mission

When the mission is complete and the drop pod is called, expect for the team to rely on you to get them out of there. it is not uncommon for the drop pod to land nearby, but in an entirely other cave system. Start drilling as soon as you know where the drop pod will be to get a head start on the aliens.

The Driller is an extremely versatile class, and Deep Rock Galactic can be a difficult game. Don’t be afraid to try out new ideas. Whether they fail spectacularly or become the new meta, Deep Rock Galactic is a game about innovation and adaptation. Rock and Stone!
