Deep Rock Galactic Season 2 release date and free new content confirmed

The hit space dwarf mining game Deep Rock Galactic is gearing up for Season 2 of its post-launch content. Season 2 will start on 28th April for PC and 5th May for Xbox and PlayStation, kicking off a new edition of the free Performance Pass, and introducing a bunch of new weapons, enemies, and free cosmetics to unlock.

Season 02 continues the light story arc from Season 01, as the Rivals to your crew’s mining operations step up their prospective efforts on Hoxxes IV. To stop them, you’ll ahve to take on the Rival Signal season event, racing against the clock to interrupt the operations of the Rival Communications Router, obtaining the data cell within the router and shutting it down before it combusts! Did someone – perhaps the Beastie Boys – scream “Sabotage”?!

In your way are hordes of new robot enemies that the Rivals have unleashed, but there’s also a new nemesis that’s set to lure you in and hunt you down systematically…

So, you want new guns? Let’s have some new guns! There’s four new secondary weapons – one for each class of player. Gunners get the Armskore Coil Gun, which can break through solid rock, Engineers have the Shard Diffractor that will detonate anything you shoot with it, Scouts get the Nishanka Boltshark X-80 with its customisable bolts, and Drillers can pop on their chef’s hats and unleash the Colette Wave Cooker. Each weapon has a full upgrade tree, weapon frameworks and paintjobs to find.

Ghost Ship Games has doubled down on the free Performance Pass, filling it with roughly twice as many bonuses for players to grab. Just as in Season 01, you can rank up by taking part in any kind of mission and earning Scrip, or complete special events that wait for them on the planet Hoxxes IV. Once you’ve levelled up, you can unlock bespoke beards, paintjobs, helmets, resource caches and weapon frameworks.

But don’t worry if you haven’t played enough of the game in Season 01! All the unlockable cosmetics will now be fed into Lost Packs, Cargo Crates, Matrix Cores and the Shop in the game to grab down the line.

All of that stuff is free, but there’s also paid DLC for those who want to masquerade as the baddies. The Robot Rebellion DLC pack will let you customise weapons and armour in the remains of the rival robots defeated in Season 01. The shop is also being updated with a new Cosmetic Mastery system and, Phazyonite, a new option for payment instead of Credits that you can earn throug Cosmetic Mastery levels.

Deep Rock Galactic has grown into a big success story, ever since its humble days in Early Access. Earlier this year it grabbed a whopping 6 million new players following its PlayStation release, thanks to the game launching straight into January’s collection of free PlayStation Plus games for PS5 and PS4. That’s a huge number of new players and sees the game now stand at a lifetime total of 10 million players after 3 million sales.

Deep Rock Galactic is a great co-op game in which space dwarves head down to subterranean caverns on an alien world and fight off alien bugs while searching valuable minerals. It comes with a chunky aesthetic that really works for the sometimes claustrophobic action and is a good bit of fun when you have a crew of buddies.

We were thoroughly impressed with the game when it launched back in mid 2020, saying:

Ooh, aah, that’s how it always starts, then later there’s running and screaming. Deep Rock Galactic can be deceptively easy going at times, right up until the swarms of bugs come crawling out of the inky darkness to besiege you and your friends. Who knew space dwarf mining could be so fun?
