Disgaea 6 Complete Review: Zed Lives Again, Again

Disgaea 6 Complete is the best possible way to play the latest insane SRPG. The performance issues from the original Switch release are gone, and the added content is great for series fans as well as newcomers. If you want to play Disgaea 6, do it with the Complete version.

I reviewed Disgaea 6 just over a year ago, and for the most part, I loved it. The only issue was its Switch exclusivity coupled with its brutal performance issues. Now, the game is also available on PlayStation and PC, with all the additional content that came to the base game. As such, this shorter review will be about the additions to this version with a short summary of the rest of the game’s quality, while my original review will cover the base game (mechanics, story, etc.).

Disgaea 6 has a thoroughly enjoyable story with likable and wonderfully loony characters and classic Disgaea humor. The gameplay has been streamlined, which I found to make for a more relaxing experience than previous Disgaea games. Whether you prefer the more complicated and methodical previous games or this newer, simpler design will come down to you, but I enjoy both. Auto-battle is a handy feature for additional grinding overnight, and there’s a huge postgame to enjoy, as usual.

Now for the Complete review. Right off the bat, Disgaea 6 Complete runs infinitely better than the original game. I immediately put my in-game setting to Graphics mode and had no frame drops or issues. On PS5, the 3D models look colorful and suitably silly, and though I still prefer the excellent 2D and pixel art of previous Disgaea titles, the style has transferred over to 3D rather well. It looks good, sounds great (the soundtrack still bops), and runs well, which is all I wanted from the beginning.

The content included in Disgaea 6 Complete is what you’d expect from a “complete” package. All the DLC characters and colors are available, with classic characters like Disgaea 3’s Mao and Disgaea 5’s Killia being included alongside Hololive v-tubers if you’re that kind of weeb. It’s a pretty strong collection of content for series fans. For newcomers, the characters can be recruited pretty much immediately and are quite good, making the already simpler game even easier.

The Final Word
Disgaea 6 Complete is the ideal way to play Disgaea 6. While your enjoyment of it will depend on whether you’re open to a simpler and more streamlined version of Disgaea, if you’re cool with it, you’ll find a robust and exciting SRPG experience to sink your teeth into. And hey, if you’re new to Disgaea, this is a brilliant way to dip your toe into the wonderfully frantic grindfest.
