Dragon Ball FighterZ Rollback Netcode Update Coming Soon

Dragon Ball FighterZ producers confirm after the grand finals that the game will receive a rollback netcode update. The information comes from Dragon Ball FighterZ producer Tomoko Hiroki herself after the conclusion of the tournament.

Dragon Ball FighterZ released in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC as a 3v3 tag fighter developed by Arc System Works. Obviously taking characters from the popular manga and anime series, it features 44 playable characters. The game although is no longer receiving new characters, it’s still seeing support for its competitive scene.

Hiroki also confirms that she believes that Dragon Ball FighterZ has been fine-tuned to the fullest. This means there will not be any future patches or balancing updates in the future. The implementation of rollback will be its final update.

Dragon Ball FighterZ has been a mainstay during the in-person tournaments at Evo. Bandai Namco also hosts world tournaments for the top player around the world.

It was only missing during 2021, due to the shift to an online tournament. The game currently before the update relies on delay-based netcode. The old practice of delay-based netcode has been severely unreliable and leads to matches full of lag and input delay.

Despite the poor netcode, the game has still seen huge success for casual fans and the fighting game community. According to official Steam stats, thousands of players still log on daily to play against each other.

Thankfully, with the implementation of rollback netcode, players will no longer have to suffer through a poor online experience.

Last-Gen Consoles Won’t Recieve The Update

Unfortunately, there will not be an implementation of rollback netcode Playstation 4, or Xbox One. Instead, the developers at Arc System Works are only bringing the patch to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series Consoles. On the bright side, a next-gen upgrade will be free for owners of Dragon ball FighterZ. It’s still unfortunate for players who do not plan on upgrading anytime soon.

On the PC side of things, the update will also be released for PC users. They’ll also be able to toggle between rollback netcode and the original delay-based netcode.

However, there should be no reason why anyone would choose the old netcode over the new rollback netcode. Hopefully, the game will default to switching to rollback when the update is live, so unaware players don’t accidentally forget to switch their settings.

Release Date

Currently, there is no official release date for the update. The wait might also take a while as Hiroki states “It will take some time.” It’s likely the update will come no later than 2023.
