EA announces new Lord of the Rings game

EA has officially announced a new Lord of the Rings video game, which will be available to play in Summer 2022.

It’s been well over a decade since the publisher’s last foray into Middle-earth, this latest title being a free-to-play mobile RPG.

EA’s Lord of the Rings games: where are they now?

While not the game announcement some fans will have been hoping for, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth is at least in good hands. Developed by Capital Games, this is the same studio that operates the incredibly popular Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes for iOS and Android. Testing will begin in the coming months.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games,” said Malachi Boyle, Vice President of Mobile RPG for Electronic Arts

“The team is filled with fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and each day they bring their tremendous passion and talents together to deliver an authentic experience for players. The combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylized art immerses players in the fantasy of Middle-earth where they’ll go head-to-head with their favourite characters.”

If we had to take a guess, Heroes of Middle-earth will mimic the strengths of its Star Wars counterpart. Players will embark on an ever-growing journey of quests and skirmishes, earning resources to unlock and upgrade their very own fellowship. Here’s how EA describes its newest game:

The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will feature immersive storytelling, turn-based combat, deep collection systems, and a wide roster of characters from across the vast universe of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Players battle through iconic stories from the world of Tolkien and take up the fight against the great evils of Middle-earth.

It certainly sounds more appealing than The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War, a formulaic mobile strategy game that launched last year.

What’s perhaps most interesting about this story is the potential for future partnerships between EA and Middle-earth Enterprises. During the time of the LOTR motion picture trilogy, EA published a string of fondly remembered games, all of which are impossible to play without some kind of workaround. With access to the Middle-earth license once again, could we see these classics return?

Whatever Heroes of Middle-earth turns out to be, it will definitely outclass EA’s previous game based on the Tolkien franchise. Lord of the Rings: Conquest was a failed attempt to create a multiplayer movie adaptation in the same vein as Star Wars Battlefront. What was perhaps most tragic about Conquest was how this flop led to the shutting of Pandemic Games.
