EDward Gaming ends Gen.G Esports’ hopes at Worlds 2021 and moves on to the grand finals

With both EDward Gaming and Gen.G Esports facing off for the first time, it surely made for some entertaining matches.

As the dust settled, only one team could come out on top and it was EDward Gaming who took the win after a hard-fought series against Gen.G Esports. With that win, EDG moves on to the grand finals where they will face DWG.KIA to determine who will lift the Summoner’s Cup. It’s also worth noting that this is EDG’s first time in the grand finals of Worlds 2021. Having always finished in the quarterfinals, they will be able to make history for the organisation if they can win it all.

Game One

The first game of the series started excitingly with both teams going at it from the start. The early game was an evenly-contested fight with both teams trading kills back and forth while the gold lead swung precariously between the two teams. However, EDG did hold a slim gold lead against Gen.G with Park “Viper” Do-hyeon already out-farming Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk. The first real team fight of the game broke out in the 16th minute when both teams tried to contest the rift herald. It went south real quick for EDG as they ended up losing four but trading three kills for themselves.

Another skirmish soon broke out a few minutes later, this time over the drake, which EDG ended up taking. They did have to pay in return for Viper and Zhao “Jiejie” Li-Jie’s lives, which opened the doors for EDG to claim the Baron. As we head into the late game, EDG still held a decent gold lead against Gen.G, who had more kills. As EDG tried to push the advantage, they soon overstepped their bounds and got caught out by Gen.G, forcing a retreat and losing Viper once more alongside Xuan-jun “Flandre” Li. This also allowed Gen.G a way back into the game via Baron.

With that, Gen.G was able to even up the game, bringing the gold differential back to almost even. Unfortunately, this was where they began to implode after trying to contest EDG’s fourth dragon. Lee “Scout” Ye-chan was too fast for the jump, being able to land a double kill for his troubles and sent the rest of Gen.G running. By this point, EDG had all the cards and was pushing Gen.G to the very limit. They even managed to lure Gen.G to contest for another dragon while Flandre went to split-push the Nexus, forcing Gen.G to throw in the towel.

Game Two

Both teams decided to stick with the same junglers for the second game with Jarvan IV for EDG and Lee Sin for Gen.G. This took a while more to get going as by 10 minutes, both teams only traded one kill apiece. Eventually, it was the LCK squad that struck first, being able to find quick kills and turrets around the map in a matter of minutes. This allowed them to play more aggressive on the map and it showed almost instantly as they kept managing to find key pickoffs from EDG.

By 20 minutes, Gen.G had a decent gold lead to go along with Kim “Clid” Tae-min who was flying this game. With their backs against the wall, EDG tried to go for an ambitious play, jumping Gen.G in the mid lane. This, sadly, didn’t work out too well for them as they ended up losing four in the process with Ruler getting the double kill with Jhin. With Scout the only surviving member, Gen.G were ready to end the game, destroying both Nexus turrets in record time. But they just couldn’t land the killer blow as by then, most of EDG had respawned.

EDG soon attempted to take the Baron but it was quickly stolen away by Clid. This allowed his team to flank EDG from the rear and they ended up killing four with Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong getting a double kill. By then, even the creeps were already pushing the Nexus, which resulted in what looked to be a killer response from the LCK team.

Game Three

With the series now all squared up, it was now Gen.G who had all the momentum and they used to to the fullest, starting the third game on the front foot. They managed to claim the first blood as well as Viper in the bot lane, essentially slowing down his farm rate. Gen.G also managed to claim the rift herald along with two more kills, putting their tally to four to one by 10 minutes. For most of the mid-game, Gen.G was just all over EDG, getting kills after kills without much of a response from the LPL champions. It wasn’t too long until Gen.G took the first lane of structures in just 26 minutes.

But their Baron attempt soon after took a turn for the worse as EDG were able to put a stop to it while getting two kills and the inner turret to boot. Gen.G went for the Baron once more a few minutes later and a massive team fight broke out, which resulted in Gen.G losing three for only one of EDG. The game was neck-to-neck at this point with EDG holding the drake advantage but Gen.G had more control over the map. Both teams soon clashed in the mid-lane with EDG losing three and soon after, the game.

Game Four

Gen.G had a tight grip on the series at the start of round four, bringing out the Miss Fortune and Lulu combination once more. As for EDG, they stuck with Jarvin IV for the fourth game in a row alongside the Lucian and Nami combo for the third time this series. This time, it was EDG who struck first with Scout claiming the first blood as well as the double kill early on in the game. By 15 minutes, he had all four of his team’s total kills, showing just how well he can play in the right conditions.

The first real team fight of the match broke out a minute later when both teams tried to contest for the second dragon. However, it was EDG who came out swinging with Viper landing a double kill while Scout and Flandre had a kill apiece. Sadly, Gen.G could only claim Jiejie and the drake as their consolation prize during that engagement. Another battle for the drake broke out soon after and it was Viper and Scout once more cleaning up Gen.G and slaying four in the process.

By then, it was a bloodbath for EDG as whenever they spotted any member of Gen.G, it was over for them. Fight after fight, EDG were able to outmanoeuvre and kite Gen.G around effortlessly. This meant wasting key spells, which in turn gave EDG the opening they needed. By 30 minutes, EDG was marching down Gen.G’s base, giving them a taste of their own medicine. It was a tough blow for Gen.G to take with the likes of Scout and Viper unkillable for the entirety of the game.

Game Five

Much like yesterday’s series, EDG versus Gen.G has gone down to the wire in the last and final game. And for his fifth game in a row, Jiejie gets his Jarvan IV. As for Gen.G, Ruler went with Miss Fortune for the fourth time today. Game five did start slow with both teams content with sitting back and farming. But soon after, EDG was out for blood and they found just that, claiming six kills, a dragon, and a turret by 15 minutes while Gen.G could only respond with a single kill of their own. It was looking rough for Gen.G as their cores were getting out-farmed by EDG, which resulted in the gold graph slowly dipping towards the LPL team’s favour.

Heading into the late game, Gen.G looked like they were on their last legs as they had no answer for EDG’s onslaught. Looking to take their third drake of the game, EDG soon found Gen.G lurking with a huge team fight breaking out right after. But with some quick movement and outplays, EDG came out on top and wiped the whole Gen.G squad with Scout getting a double kill. Even before the 30-minute mark, EDG had already destroyed all of Gen.G lane turrets, opening the map even more for them. It was a slow bleed for the LCK team as they were hanging on for dear life at this point.

For the most part, EDG kept it slow and methodical, pushing in the top lane first before charging down mid. With their tournament lives on the line, Gen.G gave it one last shot but wasn’t able to push back EDG before they took the Nexus. Many didn’t know which team would go the distance and ultimately, it was EDG who came out on top. As for Gen.G, they will head home in third place, their highest finish to date in any international tournament, which should bode well for the future.
