Elden Ring has already sold 12 million copies

FromSoftware’s latest action RPG epic Elden Ring has already sold more than 12 million copies in just 18 days, the developer and publisher Bandai Namco have announced.

FromSoftware president and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki said, “It’s astonishing to see just how many people have been playing Elden Ring. I’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire development team.”

Considering that Dark Souls 3’s record was of 3 million sales after its first full month, and 10 million after its first four years, this is by far and away the fastest and best selling game in the Soulslike subgenre that FromSoftware created. It also means that, if you ever considered the Dark Souls series to be a bit of a gaming niche (despite managing to sell a good 27 million copies through the life of the series), then we can firmly say that the Soulslike has gone mainstream.

A huge part of that, of course, will have been down to the marketing that led up to the game’s release. Excitement started well before the game’s announcement witht he rumours of a collaboration between FromSoftware and Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin. Martin was brought in to help establish some of the lore and overarching backstory of the game’s universe, but from the jumping off point FromSoftware dramatically expanded upon the well-established formula of their previous games.

Elden Ring is a sweeping open world game, introducing new gameplay elements such as being able to summon a horse to ride around on, and with which to engage in horse-back combat, and there’s a more free-form structure to the game and how you progress through its story.

It’s drawn almost universal praise – outside of criticisms over game performance – and in our Elden Ring review, Jason wrote: “Elden Ring is the game Souls fans have been waiting for. From the open world design, to riding into battle on Torrent’s back, and the dark narrative woven through the world, this is a clear Game of the Year frontrunner that will have us all ensnared for a long time to come”

Elden Ring is out now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
