Rybakina Defeats Rogers

7th seed Rybakina avoided an upset in the first round when she was able to win the third set over Storm Sanders to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. From there she defeated Marie Bouzkova in straight sets, and found herself up against American Shelby Rogers in the quarterfinals.

After dropping the first set, the 22-year old was able to piece together a comeback by winning the next two sets, to defeat Rogers 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Rogers came into the match on a high, having upset Maria Sakkari the round before.

In the quarterfinal match, Rybakina managed to win 90 percent of her first serve points in the final set to seal the deal, and recorded five of her nine aces in the decider, as well.

She’ll now look towards Doi, who has yet to be truly tested at the tournament.

Unexpected Semifinalist

The 30-year old Japanese player wasn’t expected to be here in the semifinals, but thanks to some great tennis from her and other players on tour, she’s found herself only now playing against her first seeded player at the tournament.

Doi enters the match after defeating Kaja Juvan of Slovenia, who upset second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the Round of 16. Doi defeated Juvan 6-3, 4-6, 7(7)-6(5), in just under three hours.

In this quarterfinal match, Doi managed to convert three of five break points, where her opponent only managed three of 19. Both players were close to even on serves, with the biggest difference being Juvan recording nine aces to Doi’s zero. The difference in break point conversion seems to have a played a big part in this win for Doi.

This is now the deepest run at the Adelaide International for Doi. Her previous best was last year where she reached the second round.

Head-to-Head

This is the second meeting between these Rybakina and Doi. Their one and only previous meeting came back in 2019 at the Swedish Open. After dropping the first set, Doi won that match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
