England Women are just a game away from Women’s Euro 2022 final at Wembley, but next up are Sweden Women who will face the tournament hosts in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
This is the ninth time in tournament history that Sweden will compete in the last four of the European Championship, while England are making their fourth appearance in the semi-finals.
England dominated in the group stage to top the stangings after a 1-0 victory over Austria was followed by a 8-0 triumph of Norway, before Northern Ireland were beaten 5-0.
Sarina Wiegman’s side fell behind six minutes before the interval after Spain took the lead through Esther Gonzalez, but a Ella Toone dramatic equaliser in the 84th minute ensured that the contest would require an additional 30 minutes.
After being eliminated at the semi-final stage five years ago, the Lionesses will aim to reach their first European Championship final since finishing runners-up to Germany in 2013.
Meanwhile, Sweden are seeking to reach the final of the European Championship for the first time since 2001, while their overall objetive is to end a 38-year wait for a major trophy.
Sweden entered the quarter-final tie against Belgium as huge favourites, but the game looked set to head into the extra time despite Sweden’s dominance.
Nevertheless, in the second minute of stoppage time, Linda Sembrant proved to be Sweden’s hero, sending the ball home from close range to set up a semi-final tie with England.
Peter Gerhardsson’s side will not be intimidated by the prospect of playing the tournament hosts, especially as they have also come out on top in the last two meetings with the Lionesses.
Gerhardsson will hope that he is the one who can manage to mastermind a victory to claim a fourth European Championship final appearance for Sweden.
