Esports Giants Team Up For First Women’s CS:GO Tournament At WEC

For a long time now, the subject of inclusivity for women within esports has been a hot topic within the industry and now two big names from esports have teamed up to organise what they hope will be the first of many CS:GO esports tournaments for women at the World Esports Championships (WEC) later this year.

The International Esports Federation (IESF) has agreed a partnership with the GIRLGAMER Esports Festival to work together on producing the tournament, the first iteration of which will be contested at the WEC in Indonesia in December.

The tournament will feature a number of different esports and national teams will compete against each other across the different titles in order to win a share of the $500,000 prize pool, a significant increase in scale from the $55,000 prize pool available for the same event in 2021.

Inclusivity For Women In Esports

There has been a real drive in recent times to improve inclusivity for women in esports and this is just the latest in a number of moves by which leading esports organisations are trying to improve their offerings for female players.

To that end, in addition to organising the women’s CS:GO tournament at the WEC, the IESF has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Women In Games (WIG) earlier in the year.

WIG is a non-profit organisation that’s sole focus is to help to foster, promote and maintain a safe, fair and equal environment within the gaming and esports industry for women to participate.

As yet, the prize pool for the women’s CS:GO event at the WEC has not yet been disclosed, however it is believed that eight teams will compete in the women’s event, although how teams will qualify for the tournament has not yet been specified.

The female tournament will however be one of the main focuses of the CS:GO part of the WEC event, which will also feature esports tournaments across five other games which include PUBG Mobile, Dota 2, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

“Expanding Competitive Opportunities For Women In Esports”

Commenting following the announcement of the new tournament, Boban Totovski, the IESF Secretary General explained:

“We are thrilled to be working with GIRLGAMER to continue expanding competitive esports opportunities for women in esports,”

“Hosting the first CS:GO Tournament at the World Esports Championships Finals will be a historic moment for the entire World Esports Family and we can’t wait to work on even more initiatives together to create a more inclusive World Esports Family for generations to come,” he concluded.

Those positive sentiments were echoed by Telmo Silva of GIRLGAMER who remarked:

This year’s WEC will be the largest in the event’s history with over 500 competitors taking part and will take place in South Kuta, Bali, Indonesia from the 1st to 12th December 2022.
