Esports Movers and Shakers: July 2022

Each month, ESI compiles the period’s most significant esports movers and shakers. July’s overview features some bad news with layoffs occurring across the sector, namely 100 Thieves reducing the size of its content team.

However, there were also some interesting promotions and hirings such as Jordan Fisher joining Complexity and Solenne Lagrange joining the Esports Awards.

Inven Global has not officially released a statement regarding the layoffs or its closure, but Matthiesen was previously employed by the outlet until announcing the news today. The news of the layoffs was also confirmed by the publication’s Editor in Chief, Radoslav Kolev.

North American gaming and esports organisation 100 Thieves has reportedly laid off more than 10 members of its content team.

The Esports Awards has appointed Solenne Lagrange, formerly of GINX Esports TV, as its new Marketing Director

In her new role, Lagrange will focus on building the brand’s visibility and engagement across Europe and America. Lagrange also held the position of Marketing Director at French video game company ECLYPSIA where she implemented the company’s first fundraising at a €10m (~£8.4m) valuation. Overall, she holds over 15 years of experience in marketing.

North American esports organisation Complexity Gaming has announced that actor, singer and musician Jordan Fisher has joined the organisation.

As a result, Fisher has become a part-owner of the organisation alongside joining its division of content creators. Fisher will host and participate in a range of esports and gaming events involving other content creators under the Complexity banner. According to a release, Fisher joining takes the organisation’s number of aggregate social media followers to over 100m.

British esports organisation Guild Esports has appointed Kit Brunswick, formerly of English football club Cambridge United FC, as its Safeguarding and Wellbeing Lead.

Brunswick will be responsible for leading the holistic care and safeguarding of Guild’s esports athletes, academy players and other figures. This includes implementing and building specialised training programmes, safeguarding audit processes and wellbeing care.

North American esports organisation XSET has announced the appointment of Tim Mulligan as its Head of Sales.

Mulligan joins XSET after a year as the Head of Strategic Accounts at fellow esports organisation 100 Thieves. Under the XSET banner, Mulligan aims to ‘ensure profitability’ across various areas including the organisation’s apparel, esports rosters and content creators. This is the second personnel announcement XSET has publicised in 2022.

The Singapore Games Association (SGGA) has announced its new Executive Committee Members that will serve the association for a two-year term starting from July.

Elicia Lee, Managing Director of Eliphant, will chair the association while Felicia Lim, Head of Games Business Development for APAC at Twitch, will act as its Vice-Chairperson.

Andrade will take over the company’s large partnership roster for its esports titles, which most notably includes the NBA 2K League, and will be tasked with strengthening partner relations and licences.

Real Luck Group, the parent company of esports betting platform Luckbox, has appointed Daniel Sanders as its Director of Marketing.

Sanders joins following a seven-month spell as the Senior Global Marketing Lead at Tencent Games. In his role, Sanders will lead the marketing strategy for Luckbox, as the company aims to improve its player acquisition during the second half of 2022. Sanders is the second appointment made by Real Luck Group in 2022. In March, the company hired Benn Timbury as its Chief Operating Officer.
