The scam

A EuroMillions lottery winner who scammed £34,000 ($41,199) from friends to fund his gambling addiction has been sent to prison for a year. Reece Casey won £164,000 ($198,725) in a Euro Millions lottery draw in 2019, blowing the winnings gambling. He then proceeded to scam £34,000 ($41,199) from a total of 25 victims in Sunderland to fund his addiction.

Casey’s legal counsel Kelly Sherif claimed that her client had displayed “extreme remorse” for his actions. She explained that Casey had begun gambling when he was 15 years old and that some of his previous efforts to curtail his gambling were ultimately unsuccessful.
