Every Company and IP Sony Owns

The recently announced Sony deal for Bungie has thrown a lot of chaos into the new cycle. Here’s what we know so far. The $3.6 billion deal will see Sony taking ownership of Bungie and its remaining IP. The number of studios and game rights that Sony holds is steadily growing. Here’s a recap of all the current studios and IPs that Sony owns. The list of gaming companies Sony owns is much simpler than the list of gaming companies Microsoft owns, as Sony has a much smaller footprint in the industry. That may change though, as Sony looks to better position itself to compete.

For now, this is the list as we see it. Some sources offer conflicting information. For example, some sites are listed Daybreak-owned properties like EverQuest as owned by Sony. This has not been the case since 2015. We tried to fact-check this stuff to make sure it’s more accurate, so bear with us. Here are all of the studios and franchises Sony owns.

Every Company Sony Owns

The following list is all the first-party development studios that can be confirmed to be owned by Sony. The list also includes the games and IPs that they have worked on or created.

  • Bend Studio – Syphon Filter and Days Gone developer

  • Bungie – Myth, Destiny, formerly created Halo
  • Firesprite – Horizon Call of the Mountain and other minor franchise support such as Sackboy!
  • Guerrilla Games – Killzone and Horizon
  • Housemarque – Stardust
  • Insomniac Games – Legendary developer behind Resistance franchise and Ratchet & Clank

Sony also owns a small collection of support studios that provide support to developers on various projects. They often perform contracted work with various first-party and second-party developers to complete games, testing or other tasks. Some of these were originally independent studios. Sony Online Entertainment is a pretty well-known example here. That company was spun-off and become Daybreak in 2015. Sony still retains a roster of smaller studios. The smaller support studios include: Malaysia Studio, Nixxes Software, San Mateo Studio, Valkyrie Entertainment and XDev.

Along with those studios and staff, the parent company also holds a mix of IP rights for older franchises. Many of these games were instrumental in the early years of the PlayStation brand. Sony has also sold some of these IPs over the years. For example, that aforementioned Daybreak deal saw the development and IP rights of EverQuest, PlanetSide, and DC Universe Online placed in the hands of an investment firm, and consolidated under Daybreak.

Other interesting IPs include Lemmings, which was formerly owned by Psygnosis, who became Sony Liverpool shortly before closing for good. Here’s the list of currently Sony-owned game rights that aren’t attached to a certain studio.

  • Buzz!
  • Everybody’s Golf
  • Everybody’s Tennis
  • Lemmings
  • MediEvil
  • MotorStorm
  • Siren
  • SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs
  • Warhawk
  • Wild Arms
  • Wipeout
