Everyone Getting into Gators’ Act

Florida has a deep and experienced team as evidenced by having five players with double figure scoring averages. All are seniors.

Leading the way is forward Colin Castleton, who is averaging a double-double with 14.8 points and 10.0 rebounds a game. He also has averages of 2.8 assists and 2.3 blocked shots.

Troy double-teamed and triple-teamed Castleton, holding him to 10 points. However, Florida still won handily, and the big man contributed eight rebounds and two blocks.

Senior guards Myreon Jones (11.8), Tyree Appleby (11.3) and Phlandrous Fleming Jr. (11.0) are also scoring in double digits as is forward Anthony Duruji (10.2). Appleby is also dropping 3.2 assists a game.

Jones and Appleby scored 12 points to lead Florida against Troy as six players had at least 10. Jones also had four assists and three steals, spearheading a defense that forced 21 turnovers, which led to 32 points for Florida.

Fleming finished with 11 points and six rebounds, Duruji contributed 11 points, three assists and two steals and senior guard Brandon McKissic added 10 points.

Fleming made his first start of the season while McKissic came off the bench. McKissic has been playing through a strained hamstring.

Florida scored the game’s first 13 points, led by double digits throughout the game and ran its advantage to 49-20 by halftime.  The Gators held Troy to 32.1% (18 of 56) shooting.

Something New, Something Old for OU

A newcomer and a holdover are shining for Oklahoma in Porter Moser’s first season as coach. Just four players are left from the 2020-21 team.

Senior forward Tanner Groves, a transfer from Eastern Washington, leads the Sooners with 14.9 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Groves has proven capable of handling a higher level of competition after being the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year in 2020-21 and dropping 35 points on Kansas in the NCAA Tournament.

Umoja Gibson is scoring 11.3 points a game and averaging 1.6 steals. The senior guard is one of the few players who stayed in the program after Lon Kruger retired as coach at the end of last season.

Gibson scored a team-high 13 points in the win over UCF. Senior forward Ethan Chargois added 12 points and senior guard Jordan Goldwire contributed 11 points, seven assists and four steals.

Chargois transferred from SMU and Goldwire is a Duke transfer who is averaging 9.6 points and 4.3 assists.

Oklahoma is 33rd in the nation in defensive rating as it is allowing 85.2 points per 100 possessions. The Sooners forced UCF into 18 turnovers but also committed 19.

Oklahoma made up for the sloppy play by shooting 54.5% (24 of 44).

The Sooners seemed to have the game in hand with a 63-54 lead and 3:11 left. However, the Knights scored eight straight points to make it a one-point game with 52 seconds remaining. Senior guard Elijah Harkless’ field goal with 20 seconds to go sealed the victory.

Florida vs Oklahoma Prediction

The teams last met in 2018-19 with Oklahoma winning 65-60 in the Battle 4 Atlantis in The Bahamas. No players remain from that game, though.

This being Florida’s first true road game gives some pause. However, the Gators have a deeper team, which should help them prevail in Norman in a slight upset.
