FromSoftware could be a Sony acquisition target

FromSoftware could be one of the studios that Sony is looking to acquire as it continues to build up its studio portfolio. This rumour comes from Dr Sekan Toto, CEO of Tokyo based gaming consultancy company Kantan Games Inc. FromSoftware is very hot property at the moment following the successful release of Elden Ring, but a potential buyout by Sony is still a rumour only.

FromSoftware is currently owned by Kadokawa Corporation who acquired the studio in 2014. Last year, Sony did acquire a 1.93% stake in Kadokawa as did mobile company CyberAgent. In total, Kadokawa Corporation has a market valuation of $3.2 billion. If the acquisition rumour is true Sony could look to purchase just FromSoftware from Kadokawa Corporation, or look to pay the billions of dollars to get ownership of Kadokawa Corporation. Doing so would not just bring FromSoftware into the Sony fold but other studios such as Kadokawa Games, Gotcha Gotcha Games, and Spike Chunsoft as well as a number of other interests in publication and animation.

Obviously, take this rumour with a pinch of salt. Sony will be looking at a number of studios around the world as part of its merger and acquisitions tactic, and it makes sense that FromSoftware would be considered. However, even if there is a consideration that does not equal to a fact that Sony would go for a full purchase of the Dark Souls and Elden Ring studio. Until Sony makes any formal announcement of an acquisition file this under speculation.
