Ghost of Tsushima Legends – do I need to play the campaign first?

Ghost of Tsushima Legends is now available to download as part of Sony’s PlayStation Plus March 2022 lineup. For a limited time you can grab the game for free alongside Ark: Survival Evolved, Ghostrunner, and Team Sonic Racing.

If you’ve yet to play Ghost of Tsushima then maybe you’re wondering whether you need to play through the single player story in order to fully enjoy the Legends experience.

In short, the answer is no. Ghost of Tsushima Legends is a collection of multiplayer modes that exist within the game’s universe, though you don’t need to have started the campaign or played through Jin Sakai’s quest for vengeance.

Legends exists adjacent to Ghost of Tsushima with no major ties between these two parts of the game other than the gameplay systems they share. This multiplayer offering focuses more on the mythological element in GoT as unnamed warriors fend off demon hordes as opposed to Tsushima’s Mongol invaders. There’s no need to worry about story spoilers for the main game when playing.

Each legend – whether it’s a co-op story mission, a Horde-style survival match, or a competitive bout of Rivals – is narrated by Gyozen, as if read from an ancient tome. Dig beneath the surface and you’ll find some intriguing lore though it’s not essential to the overall experience.

Throughout your single player journey, you’ll encounter Gyozen on the outskirts of most major settlements. Introduced following the free Legends post-launch update, he’s simply there to encourage you to try out Ghost of Tsushima’s multiplayer mode, transporting you to the Legends main menu.
