In a message by series producer Kazunori Yamauchi, it was revealed that all the games in the series have cumulated into sales of more than 90 million copies, as of November 16, 2022.

Yamauchi also expressed what he believes Gran Turismo is all about. Beauty.

“I believe the Gran Turismo series have always pursued ‘Beauty’. The beauty of the cars, the beauty of the scenery, the beauty of the lighting, the beauty of driving, the beauty of sounds / music and the beauty of the graphics.

“The ‘pursuit of beauty’ is the motivation for creating Gran Turismo.”

The Gran Turismo series has been at the forefront of technology. The first game featured, at the time, remarkably advanced graphics and car physics in a video game. It has also become an influential institution in the car industry on its own. From having manufacturers design entirely new concept cars under its Vision Gran Turismo program (Ferarri is the latest to join this) to supporting its most talented players to transition to a career in real-life motorsport in GT Academy.

Gran Turismo continues to explore new tech. Currently they are working with Sony AI on GT Sophy, an AI that has learned to race as fast as the fastest GT players in the world.

Here’s to another 25 years of Gran Turismo, inspiring kids and adults alike that cars are cool.

The latest edition of the series is Gran Turismo 7, which continues to receive free updates post-launch. You can check out our review here.
