FIFA 22 (PS5)

FIFA 22 (PS5)FIFA 22 (PS5)

Publisher: EA Sports / Developer: EA Vancouver

Release Date: 1st Oct 2021 (USA) / 1st Oct 2021 (UK/EU)

EA’s football sim is back with another yearly entry that’s this time geared towards making many of its online modes more rewarding. FIFA Ultimate Team returns in FIFA 22, and while microtransactions can still be seen all the way up to row Z, you’ll earn more cards the more you play. Those can then be played in the rage-inducing online matches of FIFA 22, which either make you feel like a footballing god or on the verge of relegation. It’s still FIFA alright, but the game’s been slightly tuned to be better playing and more rewarding this time around.

Battlefield 2042 (PS5)

Battlefield 2042 (PS5)Battlefield 2042 (PS5)

Publisher: Electronic Arts / Developer: DICE

Release Date: 19th Nov 2021 (USA) / 19th Nov 2021 (UK/EU)

Battlefield 2042 doesn’t have a whole lot to offer at launch, but give it a few months and it’ll be about where it should be. Or years. While there aren’t many maps to play on and the new Hazard Zone mode is pretty naff, the game still has that magic Battlefield touch in the gameplay department. Shooting feels satisfying in a way only this series can replicate, and with Portal mode bringing back classic maps and titles of the past, you could always bask in the nostalgia instead of soaking up the near-future warfare of Battlefield 2042. This one’s an investment, but it should be worth it in the long run.

Guilty Gear Strive (PS5)

Guilty Gear Strive (PS5)Guilty Gear Strive (PS5)

Publisher: Arc System Works / Developer: Arc System Works

Release Date: 11th Jun 2021 (USA) / 11th Jun 2021 (UK/EU)

Guilty Gear Strive is the best fighting game available natively on PS5 so far, so it’s already a fantastic online multiplayer title by default. Arc System Works has implemented some of the best online netcode in the business, meaning your connection to overseas players holds up no matter where in the world they are and allowing you to focus on combos and health bars. Forget the strange avatar-based lobby system for a moment and the brawls themselves feel intense with a diverse cast of characters and stages. With a committed fanbase, you’re sure to find a match for years to come in Guilty Gear Strive. Expect this one to light up the stage at EVO.

Back 4 Blood (PS5)Back 4 Blood (PS5)

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive / Developer: Turtle Rock

Release Date: 12th Oct 2021 (USA) / 12th Oct 2021 (UK/EU)

Zombies might not be the most exciting enemy type in the world nowadays, but who can say no to teaming up with your friends online and taking on the undead horde in a Left 4 Dead fashion? Turtle Rock Studios is back to try and emulate its success with the Valve IP, giving you many campaigns to complete alongside a buddy or two as well as a Versus mode. It’s great fun.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends (PS5)

Hood: Outlaws & Legends (PS5)Hood: Outlaws & Legends (PS5)

Publisher: Focus Home Interactive / Developer: Sumo Digital

Release Date: 10th May 2021 (USA) / 10th May 2021 (UK/EU)

What if Assassin’s Creed was a competitive multiplayer game? That’s the question that Hood: Outlaws & Legends answers emphatically. Two teams compete against each other to steal treasure and extract it from the map. Remaining undercover against AI patrols means your adversaries will be clueless to your whereabouts, allowing you to secretly pilfer the riches from right under your opponents’ noses. The dynamic works wonderfully well, and with Sumo Newcastle pledging ongoing support for the title, there looks to be plenty more Robin Hood-inspired online espionage on the way.
