Hogwarts Legacy - How To Upgrade Your Gear

Hogwarts Legacy – How To Upgrade Your Gear

In Hogwarts Legacy you will constantly find yourself collecting new pieces of gear, which provide both offensive and defensive benefits when in combat. While swapping to a higher level piece of gear will provide you a step up in stats, you can improve your gear to provide extra benefits as well. Hogwarts Legacy starts displaying messages about improving your gear early in the game, but you will need to progress a little bit before you have access to the system. Here’s how to upgrade your gear in Hogwarts Legacy.

You need material from beasts

Shortly after attending Beasts class for the first time in Fall and completing all available story quests at that time, Professor Weasley will send you an owl letter saying she has something new available in the Room of Requirement, starting the story quest “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom.” This quest is given by Deek, the house-elf that resides in the Room of Requirement. During this quest you will be given a tutorial on how to collect beasts in the wild and how to care for them when they are kept in the Room of Requirement.

You will collect a Puffskien, Jobberknoll, and a Mooncalf, which will provide the necessary materials for upgrading the first tier of your gear. For more on how to capture beasts and where to find more of them, check out our beast capturing guide. Once you have completed this quest, Deek will give you a loom to add to the Room of Requirement, which can be used to upgrade your equipment.

As for collecting materials from the beasts, you can collect material every 25-30 minutes, as long as the beasts have been pet and fed. To save yourself some time, head to Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade and pick up a beast feeder, which will allow your beasts to feed themselves, saving you a spell slot and time.

Upgrading equipment

Upgrading gear to the max level requires a large variety of materials.
Upgrading gear to the max level requires a large variety of materials.

Each piece of equipment you have will require a different amount and combination of beast material, depending on a few factors. The rarity of the gear impacts this–and low rarity gear can’t be upgraded at all–as well as which piece of clothing the gear is. If the piece of gear primarily provides defense, upgrading it will add offense stats and vice versa. Each piece of gear can be upgraded three times, although doing so will require a large variety of materials from some of the rarer beasts in the game.

You can also add traits to equipment or swap out a trait if there is already one present. This also requires materials, but nothing rare. The quality of the trait you can slot into a piece of gear is dependent on the rarity of the gear, with the strongest traits reserved for legendary pieces of gear.

If you are looking for materials without needing to find a specific beast, Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade sells almost every material in the game, but they can be expensive and you can only buy one of each before needing to wait for the store to refresh.
