Houston Astros Net Christian Vazquez in Trade With Red Sox

The Houston Astros have completed a trade for Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal. Boston will receive infielder Emmanuel Valdez and outfielder Wilyer Abreu.

Vazquez, 31, has spent eight MLB seasons all with the Red Sox. This season, he has batted .282 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs.

In Houston, Vazquez will provide some offense from the catcher spot, something that Houston has been lacking in 2022. He will likely be the starter, as the team currently doesn’t have anyone batting over .200 at the position on the season.

With the move, the Astros will look to compete for a World Series. They have a 67-36 record and have already made moves to improve their team before the trade deadline with the acquisition of Trey Mancini.

Because the Red Sox are currently in Houston, Vazquez will likely join the team immediately.

The Red Sox are receiving Valdez, who is batting .259 with 72 home runs and 289 RBIs in the minor leagues. Abreu has batted .256 with 33 home runs and 149 RBIs.
