How Does Short Deck Hold ’em Poker Work?

Short Deck Hold ’em is a variant of poker that burst into the mainstream poker circuit in 2018. Like Texas Hold ‘em, this action card game, also known as 6 Plus Hold ‘em, is played with a 36-card deck that removes all the 2s through 5s. It earned its popularity after it was introduced in Macau in the mix of high-stakes cash betting games. As stars are thronging the High Roller events to play the card game, the interest in Short Deck Hold’em is growing exponentially in America which has secured its place in the glamour and glitz of the world of Las Vegas.

Barring a few significant differences, most of the rules of Short deck hold’ em poker shares similarities with that of the No-Limit Hold ’em. The game makes use of a button-blind system with a change in the hand ranking due to the removal of some cards. This article will help you give a comprehensive understanding of how the game is played as well as tips and strategies to win.

Rules of Short Deck Hold’em

Short deck hold ’em follows the same rules as the original game of Texas hold ’em of which it is a variation. The significant difference is that Short deck hold’ em is played with a 36-card deck instead of a 52-card deck as all the 2s through 5s are removed.

A button-blind structure is used to play the game in which the player on the button posts a blind as every other player places an ante. Thus, unlike the more traditional version of the game, Short deck hold’ em has only one blind at play per hand which is usually 2-4 times the amount of the placed ante. Players need to match the size of the blind to complete their ante in order to call preflop.

Some of the other rules are –

  • Each of the players is given 2 hole cards
  • There are 3 rounds of community cards (the river, the turn, and the flop) with a round of betting taking place after each round
  • There are no limits on the betting amount that you can place on your stack at any time during the game

Every game of Short deck hold’ em has 4 streets of betting –

  • River
  • Turn
  • Flop
  • Preflop

Short deck hold’ em Hand Rankings

Short deck hold’ em uses the same hand rankings as that of Texas hold’ em with no limits in place for the betting amount.

Hand Ranking Hand Name  Poker Hand
Lowest High card Kx6x9x8xQx
One pair K♦K♠5x8xQx
Two pair K♦K♠6♥6♦Qx
Three-of-a-kind K♦K♠K♥6♦Qx
Straight A♠6♣7♥8♥9♦
Flush K♦J♦10♦6♦9x
Full house K♦K♠K♥6♦6♠
Four-of-a-kind K♦K♠K♥K♦6x
Straight flush A♦6♦7♦8♦9♦
Highest Royal flush 10♦J♦Q♦K♦A♦

However, due to the removal of 16 cards from a 52-deck card in Short deck hold’ em, the probabilities of attaining a certain hand are altered. For example, you will find the odds of attaining a flush extremely low due to only 9 suited cards at play instead of the normal 13 suits of cards. Hence, an alternate ranking system is introduced in Short deck hold’ em where we can see alternate hand rankings than Texas hold’ em. For example, in Short deck hold’ em, a flush beats a full house (vice versa in the case of Texas hold’ em) and a three-of-a-kind defeats a straight (vice versa in the case of Texas hold’ em).

The alternate ranking system in Short deck hold’ em is –

Hand Ranking Hand Name  Poker Hand
Lowest High card Kx6x9x8xQx
One pair K♦K♠5x8xQx
Two pair K♦K♠6♥6♦Qx
Straight A♠6♣7♥8♥9♦
Three-of-a-kind K♦K♠K♥6♦Qx
Full house K♦K♠K♥6♦6♠
Flush K♦J♦10♦6♦9x
Four-of-a-kind K♦K♠K♥K♦6x
Straight flush A♦6♦7♦8♦9♦
Highest Royal flush 10♦J♦Q♦K♦A♦

Odds in Short deck hold’ em

With the customary elimination of 16 cards, it is no wonder that the odds in play in Short deck hold’ em is completely different than the more traditional variations of poker. Some of the primary odds are –

  • You have more playable starting hands as the chances of your 2 hole cards getting paired are increased exponentially. With the elimination of super disjointed pairs, like J-4, and pocket pairs, like pocket aces, coming along twice as often, you will get the chances of getting involved in playing more hands.
  • The chances of drawing a straight also increase in this version. While you have a 10% chance of flopping an open-ended straight draw in the traditional variant, this version enjoys a 19% chance.
  • Three-of-a-kind appears less frequently than a straight in this version of poker with the odds being 17% compared to that of a 10% in Texas hold’ em

Conclusion

Short deck hold’ em has several exciting new twists compared to the traditional variant of poker that is attracting gamblers to the game. As the changes introduced are not really much complicated with the basic essence remaining the same as that of Texas hold ’em, new players can easily get a hang of the game.
