How to catch Shiny Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl come out later this week. Being 2021 remakes of the 2006 Nintendo DS classic, there’s a lot of stuff that new players might not know. With almost 500 Pokémon being brought into the Switch port, there’s a lot to catch. And some more industrious players really like Shiny variants. These specially colored rare spawns are very prized among Trainers. And some players will put hours into hunting them.

The standard encounter rate for Shiny Pokémon is 1/8192 from Generation II to Generation V and 1/4096 in Generation VI onwards. And that applies to both breeding and wild encounters. There is a way to boost chances, and you should use it. You can actually further reduce that 1 in 4096 chance of Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl by using something called the Masuda Method.

Get Shiny Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The core of this method is that you would breed together two Pokémon from different regions, thereby increasing the odds of a Shiny spawn. For some reason, many versions of the games have used this quirk to incentivize trading among players. You can use either 2 of the same Pokémon, or one of the desired Shiny and a Ditto. Players looking to raise a competitive team can put hours into “shiny chaining” to get a full Shiny roster. You just fill your team with Eggs from the breeding pair, and then hatch them.

The core thing to remember is that you need to have a Pokémon in the breeding pair that’s different from the language of the game you’re playing in. If both Pokémon are foreign to the language the game is being played in but are both of the same languages, then the Masuda method will not take effect.

So if you’re not using the Masuda method, the best way is to get your breeding chain going, and chaining eggs. Once you get going, it becomes much faster to go for shiny breeding. It takes much more time to setup, as you need a Ditto that comes from different regions to do it. That can be done by looking through online communities for the game. You can bet players will be trading away Ditto for this purpose.

You can then trade away the mons you don’t want. You will need NSO (Nintendo Switch Online) to access this stuff. Good news though, you can just go with the basic variant. You don’t need the NSO Expansion Pack to access online in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl And if you’re more of the collector type of Trainer, there’s good news for you too. Nintendo has confirmed upcoming Home support for both the new remakes.
