How to Get a Free Gengar in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Gengar is one of the most recognizable Pokémon in the franchise. Debuting with the original generation of games on the Gameboy, Gengar is one the strongest Ghost and Poison-types a trainer can have. In the new Switch games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, players can easily find a Gengar to add to their team.

If you head to Levinica City you can find an NPC who will ask you for a Pincurchin. In return, the NPC will trade you a Haunter. Luckily Pincurchin can be caught on the nearby beaches in the East Province Area Two. The wild Pokémon in this section will be around level 20 and the city of Levincia is intended to be the third gym players should attempt.

After catching a Pincurchin return to the NPC in Levincia to initiate the trade. Normally, players will need to trade a Haunter in Pokémon games to evolve a Haunter into Gengar. What is nice about this trade in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet the Haunter isn’t holding an Everstone like the one Mindy can trade players in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Completing the Pincurchin and Haunter trade will automatically trigger the Haunter to evolve into a Gengar. As long as you do not deliberately press the B button to prevent the evolution process, you will have yourself a Gengar.
