How to get and use Dark Clump in Tears of the Kingdom (TotK)

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there is an entire underground region known as the Depths. This is a hostile environment that can fell even the mightiest warriors, but there are gear and items that make the journey into the unknown a little safer. Here is our guide on how to get and use Dark Clump in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Tears of the Kingdom – how to get and use Dark Clump

When you venture into the Depths, you’re likely to take damage sooner rather than later. When you do, you will discover that healing works differently beneath the surface. Your favorite dishes, which you previously could rely on to restore your health on the surface, are pretty much useless while you remain in the Depths.

An effect called ‘gloom’ is what makes the difference. It locks your hearts away until you restore them with sunlight, or by activating a Lightroot. The good news is that there are ways to counteract this unwelcome effect. You can acquire special armor, for starters (check out our guide if you’re not sure how to get the Depths armor set). The Depths armor set adds additional protection against the effects of gloom, especially once you acquire multiple pieces.

Though powerful, the armor starts out with low defensive stats compared to what it will eventually offer. Use Dark Clump to improve the Depths set, as well as to create new recipes that provide protection against gloom. Mix a few Dark Clump items with more conventional stuff like Hyrule Herb or milk and you can gain resistance to gloom for whole minutes at a time.

To get Dark Clumps, you need to bring Poe Souls to a Bargainer Statue. There are a few of these statues located throughout the Depths. When you hand over 10 Poe Souls, the statues give you a single Dark Clump in return. They also sell pieces of the Dark Armor set, but you have to find several statues in order to build enough trust with them that they will sell you the full set. See the above map for the location of the Plains Bargainer Statue to get started.

Given how valuable they are, you’ll definitely want to grab any Poe Souls you encounter while roaming the Depths. Fortunately, once you have some souls, you don’t even have to be in the Depths to exchange them for loot.

Note that you can also make any permitted trades with the Bargainer Statue at Lookout Landing. It is in the back corner of the tent along the north side of the settlement. You should trade with the statue at least once. It will give you a single Dark Clump in exchange for the first Poe Soul you offer it. You won’t find a better deal. For more detailed information on the services it offers, check out our guide on how to use Poe Souls.

With enough Dark Clump bits, you should finally be able to gear up and explore the Depths without worrying so much about the challenging situations that arise below the surface.
