IHC keep the upsets rolling at IEM Katowice, eliminate Cloud9

Mongolian team IHC Esports keeps the Cinderella story going at IEM Katowice, the first $1,000,000 CS:GO tournament of 2023.

IHC Esports, ranked 44 on ESL Gaming Network, began to make waves at IEM Katowice in the play-in stage where they knocked out of the competition paiN Gaming, and the 9th ranked team worldwide, FURIA Esports. They did so in the lower bracket rounds of the play-in, after being sent there by Cloud9.

Following the surprising results in the play-in stage, IHC’s underdog story was in danger after losing their opening match in the groups at the hands of Team Liquid. The GSL format, however, does give room for anyone to mount a comeback, and IHC took their chance moving forward.

Their latest upset came Sunday night in the group stage, when they took full revenge over Cloud9, a team ranked 31 spots above them. The commendable 2-0 victory in Group A lower bracket over the NA organization that features a full Russian line-up, after signing the ex-Gambit Esports roster, keeps IHC in the competition, while their adversaries are sent packing before making it in front of the live audience in the legendary Spodek Arena.

IHC have a couple more rounds to survive to make their story even bigger at this year’s IEM Katowice edition. In order to make it to the playoffs, they have to pull another incredible win, this time around in the lower bracket semifinals over FaZe Clan. Their match is scheduled for today, Monday, February 6 at 19:30 CET, and if they win that they will have one more battle to overcome in order to reach the playoff, against the winner of the other lower bracket semifinal, Team LiquidvsTeam Spirit.

IEM Katowice 2023 playoff action will begin in the already sold out Spodek Arena on February 10, with the top 6 teams fighting for the title. The champions will take home $400,000 and will secure a direct invite to IEM Cologne 2023.
