It Looks Like Sony Will No Longer Be Reporting PS4 Shipments

It looks like Sony has officially stopped reporting PS4 shipments, having offered a final update in March 2022. As spotted by Niko Partners’ analyst Daniel Ahmad, this means the lifetime PS4 sales total is ~117.2 million, as noted in Sony’s latest financial report. While the PS4 couldn’t quite beat PS2’s 155+ million sales record, it was a significant turnaround for Sony from the PS3 era.

Sony barely faced any competition from its arch-rival Microsoft during the last generation. Nintendo isn’t in direct competition with either Sony or Microsoft but when it comes to the numbers game, it’s the Switch that’s apparently on track to win last gen. As pointed out by Ahmad, Switch is currently at 111 million consoles sold. It should be able to beat PS4’s lifetime total by the end of the current financial year. Nintendo has yet to announce a successor amid rumors of a “Switch Pro.”

For reference, only the Game Boy and Game Boy Color (if you combine them like Nintendo does) has sold more (118.7m), along with the Nintendo DS (154m) and PlayStation 2 (Over 155m as of March 2012).

What does this mean for PS4 support? Fret not, Sony has not indicated any plans to pull the plug on PS4 support services. The company is still releasing first-party games for the beloved system and there are plenty of third-party games on the horizon.
