Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key are teaming up with none other than famed stop-motion director Henry Selick, known for titles like Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and James and the Giant Peach. Their upcoming collaboration, Wendell & Wild, will follow two person demons of a teenager named Kat.
The first teaser for the Netflix project shows the two demons smooshing and resurrecting a bug, before zooming out onto a dope-looking jukebox playing punk beats. In fact, the YouTube video itself is titled “Kat’s Punk Playlist – Free Radio Beats To Chill/Summon Demons To” — a little homage to the whole genre of lofi beats to relax and-slash-or-study-to.

The stop-motion feature film was first announced in 2015. The original pitch, based on a story by Selick, followed the two demons facing off against a demon-dusting nun and her two goth teen acolytes. In 2018, right after Peele won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Get Out, Netflix picked up the project for a tentative 2021 release. Updates have been slow and the release date bumped around a few times. In 2020, production started remotely and was rife with challenges because of the Oregon wildfires, COVID, and political unrest. But with this first teaser, Wendell & Wild is definitely on the way, with a release date currently set to 2022.
