Kingdom Hearts 4 announced with a little gameplay teaser

Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts 4 is in development, releasing a trailer to show off their vision of the sequel and give us a glimpse of some gameplay. No platforms or release dates have been announced, but hopefully it won’t take quite as long for this sequel to be released as last time!

Labelled as the ‘Lost Master Arc’, this will kick off a new narrative for the series, which had wrapped up many of the loose ends form the series.

For this new story arc, Sora arrives on a new world of Quadratum – also described as the ‘afterworld’ – a place that has a tone similar to the real world…. just with a horrifying black shape hanging in the sky above the Japan-like cityscape that morphs into a shadowy demonic figure and goes on a bit of a rampage. Of course, Sora leaps into action to try and save the day, his iconic Keyblade and all, gappling to world objects, running up buildings, launching midair attacks and more.

We also get to see Donald and Goofy, who haven’t been transported to this new world with Sora, but are sure to be on a quest to try and find him.

Here’s how Square Enix have described the new tale:

In the announcement trailer, Sora makes a triumphant return with an updated look at the beginning of an epic new storyline titled the “Lost Master Arc.” Beginning with Sora facing off in a boss battle against a giant enemy, players are introduced to the Quadratum, a large, expansive city set in a gorgeous, realistic world unlike anything ever seen before in the KINGDOM HEARTS series. Fans will be excited to see the return of Sora’s well-known companions Donald and Goofy, in addition to the first appearance of Strelitzia, a mysterious new character who appears before Sora in this strange new setting.

So, what do you think of the announcement trailer? Does the glimpse of combat gameplay give you hope? And what about the new graphical direction that the series is taking? Let us know in the comments.

Looking back on the last mainline game, Square Enix finally wrapped up the main trilogy story arc with the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 in 2019 and the DLC that followed. In our Kingdom Hearts 3 review, Jim said:

“Kingdom Hearts III doesn’t go in the direction some RPG fans will no doubt have been hoping for. It’s unashamedly over the top in just about every way, from its barmy story and stunning presentation to its huge cinematic battles. There’s plenty of depth here too, though you’ll need to find your bearings first.”
