Melbourne flexed their muscles in the final round of the season against Brisbane just when they needed to and earned a home preliminary final.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the 2021 premiers during this campaign.
Having won their first 10 games, they then went on to drop six of their next 10 including a two goal loss to Sydney at the MCG in June.
Sydney finished the year with seven wins in a row including the Pies, Dockers and Bulldogs.
Lance Franklin has booted 3+ goals in four of his last five games and Isaac Heeney has been a barometer up forward kicking two or more goals in nine of his last 10.
Both teams finished the home and away season on 16 wins with only percentage separating them and they are extremely even on a lot of the key statistical areas over the season as well.
Melbourne’s stellar midfield give them the edge at the center bounce and around stoppages and the Swans ranked 15th in center clearances which is of some concern.
The Swans have not had an issue giving their forwards opportunities to score however, ranking third for shots on goal throughout the regular season.
Recency bias has us believing that Melbourne have found form after their devastating win over Brisbane during the last round but I think this game will be much closer than people are suggesting.
A low scoring and contested game is the most likely outcome so I’m playing around that.
